Case fan holes do not line up.
How am I supposed to know if the holes line up without removing from packaging? Both fans are 120 mm but do not match? Are they not universal? Packaging doesn't seem to have any measurements beyond the fan itself.

Old fan is dying. New fan didn't match. Not sure where I go wrong other than returning and trying another.

If the screw holes dont match then guess you bought the wrong size for your case, some cases use smaller 90mm fans. 120mm and 140mm slots that can take both usually have two sets of holes for screws.

60-80-90-120-140 are common fan sizes
all of the same size have the same mounts
you can measure the spacing and add about 1cm to see what size fan it should take

Just for clarity, do we measure from corner to corner?

across or down

120MM = 12CM
Get a ruler measure Horizontally or Vertically doesn't matter. Edge to Edge.

for the holes, 105mm spacing is 120mm fan

No, side to side, as they are square so all sides would be the same... 92, 120, 140, 200 mm or 9, 12, 14, 20 cm

Idk why you have to measure, look at the specs sheet of your case, it should list what each fan placement accepts for size(s)

so just to clarify what ended up being the issue.
I bought a standard 120mm fan. It didn't fit. The old fan was also 120mm but did fit.

Turns out. The old fan had an adapter on it and once i placed it on the new fan, it fit.
I had never even considered that a piece of the fan came apart. It fixed the hole problem. I guess neither fan was meant for the case but whatever the adapter came from/with, was the solution for this case. The case itself is ancient so yea.

You sure it's not just an adapter allowing a 120mm fan to fit on a place designed for 140mm ?

What's the measurement between the fan screw holes on the case?
