strange glitch where most keyboard keys do not work in game

Occasionally I start a game, and frustratingly discover once in game that many of the keys on my keyboard don't work in the game. It's always the same keys, all of the letter and number keys.
The space bar will work, the escape button, the tab button, and the mouse. The only thing I can do at this point is exit the whole game and log back in and at that point it's fixed. This never happens when not in a game. I'm not sure what the problem is and can't find any information.

Yes it's connected. unplugging it and replugging it doesn't do anything. Again the keyboard works fine out of game, and it's only in game where the same keys don't work. The space bar and escape key always work.

no I don't have a controller hooked up. They keyboard is ALWAYS fine when not in the game. This is an occasional glitch that arises during a game. If the problem was with the keyboard I'd be having the problem outside of games also.
