if you installed mods for the game, most likely it was some form of trojan or malware giving others control of the pc
Edit ; Because the only place I've heard of this is in the Bo2 forums.
However, certain hackers do like trolling with a RAT (Remote Access Trojan), in which they can see and control your PC. Changing wallpaper, playing sounds, or waking your PC up in the middle of the night if it's on sleep mode, etc.
If you believe you are infected, then download Spybot, Malware Bytes, or Kaspersky. Install the security software and update to the latest. Disconnect from the Internet as soon as you have done so (pull out the Internet plug or turn off your Router). Run a full scan while offline. If it is a RAT or similar virus, while the hacker is online he can attempt to cancel those things, so it's ideal to remain offline while cleaning.
If a virus has been detected and cleaned, the next step is to secure all your accounts and email. Change the passwords. Check your bank, etc. RATs can also key log, view what you are doing and snoop for passwords. So over time might of grabbed your login details.
He's playing CoD:Bo2, which currently has an exploit where you can remotely execute code on a persons computer.
In this case, the guy changes the persons computer background. (That I'm aware of, he could be doing other stuff to, but I'm not even going to begin to speculate, because I don't know what's possible with this exploit.)
There's plenty of other people complaining about the same situation, with one thing in common, they joined a 'modded lobby' with a certain cheater 'hosting' the lobby (in CoD:Bo2.)
It's the one reason why I currently refuse to play public matches of my favourite game. (Check my played games, CoD:Bo2, 3,000+ hours.)
But, I do recommend to do everything you said, just incase (because, like I said, I don't know the limits of the exploit, and what he can do.)
Better safe than sorry.
Edit ;
A little off topic, but I believe the person that is responsible for this also spoofed my Steam ID in the game, resulting in lots of the people wanting to add him add me, and complain about cheating/hacking.
Quite why he would do that, after I hadn't played the game in several months, I'm not sure.
Regardless, it's quite disturbing.
No banking on it, No family pics, no email checking that pedos could steal and sell on deep web
