You should be fine using the single cable with 2 bands for audio only when connecting it to a headphone jack on your computer.

If you want to use the Microphone aswell as Audio your computer needs a port that accepts audio and microphone from a single jack, 3 bands.

If you have both headphone and microphone jacks on your system you'll need the extension cable that separates Audio and Microphone. Unless you only want audio where you should be able to plug the 3 band jack into the headphone port and the microphone part is ignored

Yes, you need both cables - connect the one with a single jack & volume control to your headset, then connect the other end to the splitter, and finally the splitter to the PC.

If you have a laptop with a single jack, disconnect the splitter and connect the single jack from your headphone to the laptop.

look at the cable
4 conductors with insulating 3 bands = stereo+mic
3 conductors with 2 insulating bands = stereo, or mic only (often color or symbols to identify them)

pc audio has a seperate jack for stereo output and mic input
if the headset has a cable with 4 conductors with 3 insulating bands, you need to use a stereo/mic splitter to connect it to a pc
