You could argue it would be easier to damage (via liquids or knocking it), but that's kinda meh, since it's unlikey to happen anyway.
Your case must have really bad air flow or design if removing the side panel helps alot.
Buy one with good airflow and outfit every space with a good fan. You can do that for around $50
I've run whole PCs for years where it just sat on the motherboard box, on top a table. Lol...
