Does a cpu overheating dramatically effect fps/performance?

Before I get the flood of coments saying how dumb the question is, I just wanted to say im not much of a tempature expert and mainly wanted to confirm if my thought was right.

I recently got a gtx 1080 and was trying to bench mark in 3d mark and noticed my cpu score was very low around 6.44 (first time I began to notice). The average was about 12-15 that other people were getting for there scores on the bench mark test. Also picked up Battlefield 1 with my card and noticed that im getting around 25-40 fps in the more populated 64 player games. A few videos I saw people were getting at the minimum of 60+fps on the same Ultra settings I was on and im only playing in 1080p. When playing any of the 64 player gamemodes in battlefield 1 the temps spike from an idle 65ish degress celsius to 95-100 degress celsius. Im thinking that the main culprit behind the lack of fps could be my i7 4770 processor over heating.

So my main question, can the high tempature effect the fps and performance in my gaming that dramatically? Or more obviously the more CPU intesive games?

-Asus strix Gtx 1080
-i7 4770k 3.5 ghz stock
-16 gigs of ram
-Windows 10 64 bit

That is waaaayyyyyyyy too hot. Your cpu is likely throttling (lowering its own frequency on the fly do save on thermals). Clear out any dust in your pc, and re-apply thermal paste; about the size of a pea. Once its applied, do not lift your heatsink to verify your job, this will only introduce air gaps into the spread.

What case/ fan configuration are you using? CPU cooler as well?

Edit: I've never heard of any1 using Charmin before lol. Just use 99% isopropyl alcohol and a lint free microfiber cloth. Point is to apply it correctly without too much or too little paste.

1st Check your airflow this easily done by stuff that emits smoke even dry ice in water and a fan (you may need to turn around fans) static pressure fans would be a buy suggestion. (Reminder 2 intakes in front one outtake in the back. If you have a radiator, have it as a outtake as well.) You can easily get better airflow just buy having airflow go through the top of the case, You just need two new fans.

2nd reapply thermal paste. if it's stock cooler replace the cooler RIGHT NOW!

3rd if nether really works ether get a new cooler, get a better airflow case, ramp up fan speeds, or have 5 static pressure fans and a AIO liquid cooler with two of the fans on the Rad or more depending on rad size.

Holy Crap. Idletemp 65°C? That should be the max temp under full load for several hours.
Everything above 70 is dangerous and will decrease the lifespan or your cpu dramatically at these stages of heat.

BTW your PC is lacking security functions. You should consider buying a new Mobo because your PC should have already shut down much sooner.

100C is the thermal limit for Intel chips so if your 4770k is hitting that it is definitely throttling. Are you using the stock cooler? I would reapply thermal paste and ensure that all 4 push pins are fully pushed down.

i was hitting that with my i7 4790K. Then i got the artic silver 5 thermal paste and cooler master hyper212X and they went to 30-35 on idle. I had an stock cooler before.

It's not even 100°C, the exact max Temperature is 72,72°C for the i7 4770 ( :P )

It should already throttle at 75°C, and should shutdown at around 85-90°C.

I really suggest if you have stock cooler to get a aftermarket air cooler, AIO, or custom water cooler if you so choose. The stock cooler is good for no overclocking and gaming with the fan ramped up to a high or max speed

Thanks for all the replys guys! After cleaning up a year and a half worth of dust today it ideles at a minimum of 40c and a maximum at 50c degrees. Also im using the stock cooler fan that came with the processor.

Also I ordered a new cooler: Cooler Master Vortex Plus along with some artic silver 5 thermal paste.

Also I hear mix things when applying thermal paste. Should I evenly spread the paste with a plastic card or just put a pea size glob and squish it on with the new cooler when it comes?

Also I still wanted to know, would I get a noticable increase in performance when the processor finally cools down from this crazy 100 degrees C?

72C is Tcase Max, which is not what we're talking about here, since the CPU has no sensor that monitors Tcase temperature.
