Laptop keeps overheating when playing games.
Hello there.
So I have an old laptop bought 4-5 years ago.
The problem for my laptop is that it keeps overheating and then shuts down with a buzzing sound. It occurs when playing games or when I'm watching videos. I need help for this.
I tried all those things to prevent my laptop from overheating such as:
a)Buying a cooling pad
b)Putting thermal compound(Coolermaster) on the CPU.
c)Cleaning all the dusts inside my laptop.(Including fans).
d) No virus at all.
e) I updated my Graphics to the latest version.

When I play games such as CSGO, I get 80-100 fps(Didn't overclock my CPU). But then at certain times it still crashes.
And for Dota 2, I never get to play it anymore because it will keep overheating at the loading screen.

If any of you wonder what my specs is, here it is:

Processor: Intel Core i5 M520 @ 2.40 GHz
Installed RAM: 4.00 GB(Can be upgraded to 8 GB).
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M

I'm interested on buying an external GPU for my laptop. Will this help me prevent shutting down and overheating or will I just replace a newer RAM?

By the way, my laptop's battery is not working anymore. So whenever I want to use my laptop, I need to use the AC Adapter.

A desktop takes too much space for me. So I need a laptop that is good for gaming. But my budget is too low. Might be around $300.

Laptops below around the $800 range are no good for most games that actually need an AMD/NVIDIA dedicated GPU (which is most games; when they run off DirectX or OpenGL)
Okay then. But if I want to build a PC, is there any case which is a bit smaller?

You can get some very small cases.

If you can save $500-600 dollars, you could build a desktop with an i5-6500 and a GTX 1050Ti* that would run games at 1080p in the 30-60fps range.

If you can stretch your budget to the $400 range, you are looking at a laptop with an Intel Core i3-6100u and Intel HD 520 Integrated Graphics. It will handle eSports and multiplayer titles at a resolution of 1368x768, depending on how well the game is optimized.

I have intel HD 520, i5 6200u, 12gb ram and I can confirm that this laptop can run CS:GO at 60-90 fps on low 728p, I haven't tested medium or high because I always take performance over graphics. The FPS rarely drops under 60. But still, building a new PC is a much better and cheaper solution.

In the advanced Power options, look for the "Max processor power state while plugged in" setting and put it somewhere between 60-80%.

try turning on vsync. that should reduce the load and thus the temps

use a usb laptop cooler and/or elevate laptop from table for a 1-inch clearance?

Try lowering your clockspeed by going to advanced power options in the control panel and then setting the maximum processor state to %99 or %90. I have found with my own laptop that seems to fix the problem of overheating for me since my cooling system can actually keep the temps from going over 70 Celsius which cuases throttle and crashes. Sure it sucks to have a lower clock speed but for most games it does not really make a difference even more so for laptops since most of the frame time is spent drawing due to the weak GPU. Hope this fixes your problem.

I'll try doing that.
