Upgrading from i3 3240 to i7-3770K
I'm thinking of buying a used i7 3770k from a friend, the 3240 has been limiting me in some games, so even a slight improvement would be appreciated, however my motherboard has a 1155 socket which doesn't support modern day CPUs and I don't wanna spend a lot of money on a new motherboard and a new CPU.
My motherboard doesn't support overclocking and I wouldn't even want to overlock, however my friend has the 3770k overlocked, I have little experience with CPUs so, is it worth?
Can I reset it back to fresh instead of overlocked? Will there be any damage because of that?
My other specs are a GTX 1050ti, 8 gigs of ram.
thanks

If he's only giving you the CPU, it'll be set to stock when you install it. Settings are stored in BIOS on the motherboard.

Yes only the CPU

Overclocks are stored in a motherboards Bios so you won't have to revert the Overclock as you're only getting the CPU.

Do not spend considerable amount of money on it though.
It is similar to modern i3 at best, and is not great for modern games either, so paying more than ~$50 for it would be a bad idea IMO.
If you motherboard does not support OC it is even worse...

Well he is selling it for like 80 euros so...
What's a budget combo motherboard plus CPU that will serve me well, I don't need anything special of a motherboard, the CPU should be solid, like i5 or i7, not more than 200 euros

8GB of Ram will limit you.
If practical consider a new CPU/motherboard/memory ryzen setup.
The i7-3770k is still decent but is will not be useful as a good gaming CPU for much longer.

First update boars to latest bios.
But yes a 3770 or 3770K would be fine but you'll need a cpu cooler. Something like CM Hyper212 EVO V2 or something similar from BeQuiet would be fine. You also will want another 8gb of ram, an SSD and Win10 64bit 1909 or later
