Overclocking my CPU reduced performance?
Had my I7 4790K at 4.0 ghz base speed and assassins creed oddysey would keep a almost consistent 60fps with a high-very high preset, after overclocking to 4.6, it was struggling to maintain 50 for some reason.

Does anyone know why?

Temparatures went from about 65ish at 4.0 to about 75-78 on 4.6

Likely you're not using a software which accurately shows temps, it's most likely throttling. And you probably don't have your offsets set up right... You should get a new intel 9th or 10th gen and use their automatic overclocking tool Intel Performance Maximizer if you wanna OC.

was mostly just testing if higher clock speed improved the games performance, because of all games i own, ac oddysey refuses to maintain 60 fps at all times no matter the settings, just a curiosity thing, switched back to default speed now anyway and i was using core-temp to check temperatures

Lmao no. Automatic software for overclocking is garbage.
You literally just tweak it until it's safe, that's better than any software.

Intel Performance Maximizer does it all for you through multiple tests, will go through the night to find the best and most stable OC for your system. But it only works on 8th gen and above. (not even sure about 8th gen, for sure 9th and 10th gen chips)

Every CPU and GPU aren’t equal. Some achieved silicon lottery, and some will ♥♥♥♥ itself if you even increase by 25mhz.
You probably lost the silicons lottery.
Overclock may cause more instability if done wrong or unlucky cpu.

Eh not really good. If you actually want to know the best OC, you have to do it yourself. Most autooc program sucks lol

Are you not listening? Overclocking experts like der8auer do not use trash software like that.
The tried and true method to get a proper overclock is to do it yourself in BIOS.

Don't recommend trash automatic OC programs.

That was before. IPM is new and plenty optimized for 9th and 10th gen chips to achieve the best overclock.

its called throttling

higher oc will make it throttle if its overheating (cpu or vrm)
check with cpuz and/or hwmonitor to watch clocks under load (alt+tab takes long enough for temps to drop 20+c)
at idle or light load it will be at oc clocks, but when vrms or cpu are at max temp it will throttle

I don't care how "optimised" you think it is. Manual overclocking is the way to go, always.
And if it's "optimised" for 9th gen and newer, then it's not even relevant in this thread because this is a 4th gen CPU.

upgrade to modern, then use IPM, get maximum performance.

This is just laughable. He doesn't need to upgrade the 4790K just yet, it's still a fantastic CPU, being about as good as a Ryzen 5 3600 and being capable of handling a 2080 Ti. Instead of giving him answers that'll cost him upwards of 1000$, you should be pointing out the obvious, that it seems like a throttling issue or unstable OC.

Your advice lately has been awful, seriously. You tell people to buy 10th gen i9 HEDT CPUs that are designed for work, when they're only looking to game, simply because "futureproofing," and because you yourself game on a 10900X and Titan RTX at 1080p, which is such a massive waste of money. The Ryzen 5 3600 costs 5 times less but the FPS difference is not nearly enough to come close to justifying the 10900X for gaming.

Sure, it'll '''HELP''' newer folks overclock their CPU, but it's not the best.
Unless, you can show me any evidence which supports your argument?

I don't want to spread misinformation, so if I'm telling people to use BIOS, the clearly inferior method, I'm doing them a diservice, so I'd like to see info to better help, that is, if you can provide it. B^)

oh ♥♥♥♥ your using a hazwell cpu XD you do not overclock those manually. your risking blowing out the memory controller circuit on the cpu. i do believe the support turbo tho (minor overclocking on the fly) when the motherboard supports it.

im using that same cpu and it has been rock solid for years. on the second psu and still gaming. i do have turbo mode on my board and have not seen games demand enough to get it to oc. well except for ark survial evolved and the server i was on crashed from people downloading a ton of dinos at once.

BIOS not good for inexperienced PC dwellers, and at this point IPM has pretty much surpassed regular OCing when it comes to the newest model of CPUs. The downside is it takes like 6 hours to do its thing, that's if you have an SSD to recover from all the rebooting.
