Check out Ryzen 3 based laptops they are around $400 and can at least run the oldies without any hassle.
EDIT - you may want to check out some streaming solutions:
Google Stadia[stadia.google.com]
moonlight[moonlight-stream.org] (open-source nVidia GeForce Experience / GameStream)
AMD Link[play.google.com]
Never again will i buy laptops for gaming...granted, it's mobile and doesn't take much space but after a year or two troubles arise and it doesn't stop.
would you be willing to sell it possibly? im so annoyed at myself!
The cost would still be high though, you would still need a PSU, RAM and videocard,
and a PC case capable for E-ATX motherboards
Chromebooks are not made with gaming in mind, browsing and videos and such sure, but "major" games are a no no.
if you cant return it then you're pretty much screwed.
Link us to the product page online that has the specs. It is possible to wipe them clean and install a Linux distro
