Placing CPU of a higher generation in a Motherboard that doesn't support it?
Hi there, a help of advice please.
Say, I've got ASROCK H110 PRO BTC+ Intel H110 1151 motherboard, that officially supports 7th and 6th Generation Intel®.

If I were to buy one of these:
1) Intel CORE I5-9600K 3.7 GHZ SKT1151
2) Intel Core i5-8600K Retail,

Noting they have the same socket (1151), will they be supported/functional?

Kind regards.

won't work
the socket 1151 V 1 boards have a different pin out for the CPU
to run the 8th or 9th gen intel Cpu's you need a motherboard with socket 1151 version 2

check your mainboard makers manual .. pretty sure the highest CPU that board will support would be a intel i 7 7700k

you would also need a Z Series chipset board to make use of a k CPU if you plan on overclocking as i do not think the one you have supports overclocking via your system bios

i have an Intel socket 1151 v1 board too ..
( Z 270 chipset with an intel i 5 7600 K )

intel changed the position of a few of the pins in V 2 boards and CPU's so to use 8th or 9th gen CPU's you'd need a new board

Could you please explain a bit more, how consuming less power can damage CPU?

Plus, I was running most of games on Pentium CPU 2cores (G4500 @3.5ghz), that feeds on 51W. The above selections require 95W. They would actually consume more power.

Upd. aand that answer is gone.)

Right... thank you guys. I guess I will go for the 7th generation cpu then.

just because you have a 7th gen motherboard, does not mean buying 7th gen is profitable.
Buying 7th gen CPU now is a loss if you pay the full price. Because 8th and 9th gen CPUs have 50% more cores but same price.

Even if the pin-out and everything else was the same, the BIOS would need an update to recognize the CPU you put in. If it's not on the supported list, in my extensive experience, it won't work.

Best to go second hand, unless there's a bottom of the barrel 6th generation in there now. The performance increase may not be worth paying full price.

You may also want to look at getting a 8th/9th gen motherboard/cpu combo, which may be similar in price to buying a 7th, assuming the memory can be transferred.

i would agree ..buy a newer CPU and mainboard ..i been shopping for a 7700K since i built my system .. (they were out of stock the day i bought my parts at my microcenter store )

they still cost a ton of cash .. for the CPU itself (saw today on e bay , an i 7 7700 K used is going for about $300 bucks for just the cpu ) ..and you can get a better deal on a ryzen based main board and CPU or even in intel one as yea even those older 7th gen mainboards (the good ones anyway with the z 200 series chipsets ) seem to have went UP in price , as less are available as a new product

and for the cash i spent in 2016 for my asus strix mainboard + ram + my i 5 7600 K

, i could get a much faster system for less money at my local micro center today .
they have a decent bundle with an i 7 9700 k for less then i paid back then .

but for now i'm happy with my PC's performance since i only game in 1080 P
and if i was looking to upgrade i'd go AMD now adays as the CPU's they make have improved over the past few years and closely match intel performance

and to the OP that board you have , was made for bitcoin mining and may not be the best for games anyway .

Intel 1xx and 2x series do not support 8th or 9th Gen cpus, even physically. The 3xx chipsets use what's called LGA 1151 V2

Omg we have the same motherboard
