Xbox Series X vs equivalent PC
I got bored and decided to go on PC part picker and come up with this:

https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/PRgsjp

The parts might not be fully compatible as it was all thrown together in about 5 minutes. I just built this out of curiosity. I tried to pick the cheapest options available for the parts included although maybe a few costs could be cut here and there. I didn't include a controller as I understand some people wouldn't consider that a necessity. That being said, the overall cost right now comes to almost £1600!

Can somebody please explain to my why someone would build this for gaming when a console just as powerful will be available for about 1/3rd the price by the end of year? I can't see the price of PC components dropping that much within 9 months. I am well aware of the advantages PC gaming offers (I play primarily on PC) but does that really justify all the extra money? It might also be worth mentioning that 5 years from now the PC would probably struggle to run games to the same standard as the Xbox.

Rather than upgrade my PC it might just be cheaper to by a console lol. This has been bugging me for a while now so I'd be interested to hear what you guys think.

The point is that it's important to realize that the hardware company and console manufacturer has a vested interest in getting people hyped about their new release. And it's important to withhold judgement until we actually see the hardware in our own hands and can run it for ourselves to see what it can do.
That's not how pc enthusiasts behave lol, we often knew how well hardware would perform before release.

Also there's the software side of things... This is not the 90s and early 2000s anymore... Rendering tricks are abundant everywhere, since the current gen consoles we have things like checkerboard rendering, image reconstruction, DLSS etc...

And about history thing that you keep babbling about? Have you tried using CPU like the jaguar in the current Gen consoles? Do you have any idea on how weak they are? Yet using such antiquated cpu consoles can run games with amazing graphics, a pc with that kind of cpu paired with 2080ti would struggle maintaining 1080p 60 fps.

Jaguar was worse than the failed FX line amd cpu and when zen 1 was released, the IPC leap from FX to ryzen was like 50%, and then for zen 2 we had another 13% or something IPC increase.

So for consoles, the IPC increase alone from jaguar to zen 2 would be close to 100% that's still not counting clockspeed differences, and software optimizations... And as I said before, rendering tricks and tech.

Your downplaying of the reality suggest you know little about computing hardware.

Are you sure you replied to the right comment? I haven't said diddly squat about history. I know it's not how most consumers behave but it's still the right thing to do. Everything looks well and good on paper and I'm hopeful for a huge leap in consoles this generation.

Keep it in your pants until the hardware actually comes out and we see what it can do.
Aside from the raw performance of these consoles, I'm really excited for the "Next Gen" features like quick resume, virtual RAM and improved sound accuracy.

So far we've only heard about this sort of stuff on consoles. I really hope these features come to PC but I don't know if its possible for valve to implement a feature like quick resume on steam.
Digital Foundry says that the Xbox will be comparable to the 2080, not the 2080 SUPER. Also, the 2070 SUPER is essentially a 2080 and cost $500 verses $800.

The next-gen Nvidia cards will come out before the new Xbox and the lower end (3060) will likely offer the same performance for $300-400.
also consider the console will be recording/streaming gameplay (xbox may also be recording its hdmi input) while gaming, which takes a considerable amount of cpu/gpu/disk power/time

It doesn't. Consoles use ASICs for video recording/streaming.
are you sure?
no dedicated cpu/gpu/drive for capture/recording in xbone/ps4

They did though. The Xbox One and PS4 had dedicated chips for encoding.

Pretty much any GPU these days has enc/dec ASIC, XO and PS4 are no exception.
well i can tell you for a fact that every game I ever played on microsoft windows thru my pc on my 1080SC got 4k 60fps...my son tells me that his XB1X looks crisp and smooth like the games I play on microsoft PC the graphics are almost as amazing looking as PC but not quite there...now I got a 2080Ti XC and there are still games that dont get a solid 60 fps when i turn all the settings up...which is disgusting! Red dead 2 and some other games I have will still run around 30fps with all the settings turned up...a 1300 graphics card doesnt get 60fps in 4k on every single game is despicable...PC fanboys or girls are thick if they think that a PC is better than a console simply because they can pick their parts...

consoles are optimized better because all the internals are the same...and not to mention games will look better and better over the life over that console generation because they learn to utilize it and squeak out as much performance as they can. PC on the other hand my graphics card will become less and less efficient as the games get more advanced because they release new components for ridiculous prices instead of optimize the ones you've already paid stupid money for...i was dumbfounded that my gpu cant get every single game @ a solid 60fps in 4k with settings turned up and i havent even used and rtx features yet...when you spend $1300 on just the graphics card you shouldnt have to compromise at all.

I've spent way more for and on my PC than I ever had to for gaming on my consoles...so PC is NOT cheaper than console for the purposes of gaming. I gamed on console for 35+ years and I can tell you for a fact that when I switched to PC things got way more expensive than when I Was on console...I get a laugh when PC people talk about PC being cheaper...cause they spend 4 or 500 and get the equivalent of my old PS2 to play on...console is way more efficient and cheaper for gaming than PC...this is a fact.

It kinda makes me face palm when people complain about how you have to pay for their console online service yet will spend ridiculous amounts of money for just the parts and still have to contend with people cheating frequently and dont see how ignorant that is. And if games arent on sale they are still expensive...if PC was cheaper than u wouldnt have to wait for a sale to buy a game you want because in reality physical discs should be more expensive than digital copies you dont even own and cant sell to someone else when you're done with it. But hey say PC is better because u can pick your own parts, and you don't have to pay an online service to maintain that service...you just deal with all kinda of issues and cheaters constantly
Im mad as hell my 1300 graphics card will not play every game (Without using rtx)in 4k@60fps consistently. For than much money I could buy a console and a 4k TV... PLUS some controllers and a bunch of games...for just the price of my gpu...u cant play PC with just a gpu...

how much hardware does it take to emulate a ps2 or wii
I really doubt people would buy PS5 to emulate 20 years old console like PS2. To emulate PS2 it might take up to 1 core of 3700X.

I will gladly buy a PS5 to play the games for that generation, and as a bonus will be able to play my entire library of PlayStation games from all previous generations. which is a lot...not to mention i wont have to use RCA cables on my old consoles to play those games in a much smaller box on my flat screen or use an old TV, or not have to buy a new flat screen that still lets you use RCA jacks...I have 4 TV's in my house and none of them have RCA jacks. My father had to buy a new 43 inch flat screen TV that actually had the jacks just to hook up his older consoles. Or emulate games on my PC which I aint doing...

>HDMI to RCA
Anyone? No? Just buy a new TV, that seems like the logical approach.

You have the entire internet at your fingertips, you could research what you're buying, and you are still 'shocked' and 'disapointed' in the performance of it?
Jesus.

You can buy a PC that competes with consoles for cheaper than them or the same price.
You don't have to pay for online services (except ISP), which while you cry isn't a valid point, brings the price of the console up.
PCs have countless use cases, where as a Console doesn't.

You cry about the price of a PC, but you're buying top of the line hardware, you can't compare that to consoles, it's a different league.

Also, a console can't do 2160p60fps, so I don't know where you pulled that from.

In the 1080's time, games were designed for very limited hardware in mind, that being the original consoles.

Also, settings were different back then. What was "Ultra" back then is now "High" and what Ultra settings are today are basically settings that offer a barely noticeable improvement to image quality and yet consume twice as gpu resources. Ultra settings are no longer balanced to be a practical setting for high end PCs. Now they are basically tech demos where the devs give you an option of removing any sensible limitation on the relevant graphic setting.

The solution is to have no shame in using settings that are practical. No, you don't need MSAA when you play at 4K. You don't need super realistic volumetric fog and ambient occlusion when they cut your fps in half.
Volumetrics and god rays look soooo good though
