(the launch 80g backward compatable ps3 had ps2 hardware in it)
similar story with xbone (it can play some x360 titles, but needs to download a version designed for the console, used the disc as a cd/dvd key)
this said, console games are heavily optimazed. the series x is no way as powerful as a pc with a 2080 and ryzen 7 3700x.
and you can do soo much more with a pc.
i'm planning on building a 700euros PC this summer, and even thought the series x will outperform it by much, pc has just too many advantages that i need:
- you can use a pc for anything, a console only for gaming/yt/netflix
- i mainly play tf2 and csgo. can't fin them on console.
- i prefer mouse and kboard to controllers, they're more accurate and controllable.
this said, to each their own. you wanna a console? geti it
Struggle to meet the PR departments aggressive claims? Absolutely, because that's the name of the game.
That's the disconnect some of you seem to be having. Because the new console has more power doesn't mean it becomes more difficult to for the PR department to make questionable claims and exaggerated claim? That what they say and what you imagine isn't quite the same thing, and they know it, but are very careful to tantalize your imagination with the possibilities...
That's been the status quo for decades, it's different in 2020 because the hardware looks good on paper and there's no way reality could be misrepresented or the truth stretched just a little bit?
All I'm saying is history teaches us a lot, and there's a pretty clear pattern between what's stated before a console is released and the reality afterward and very seldom is that seamless. I don't think that's changed in 2020.
best to wait for reviews and compare how it performs to pcs
But we have no performance tests so far, so can't tell how exactly powerful they are.
Digital Foundry tests and comparisons are what I personally am waiting for. Not that I'd buy any modern console anyway, but I want to see consoles having decent hardware. PS4 and XO were a joke.
Also there's the software side of things... This is not the 90s and early 2000s anymore... Rendering tricks are abundant everywhere, since the current gen consoles we have things like checkerboard rendering, image reconstruction, DLSS etc...
And about history thing that you keep babbling about? Have you tried using CPU like the jaguar in the current Gen consoles? Do you have any idea on how weak they are? Yet using such antiquated cpu consoles can run games with amazing graphics, a pc with that kind of cpu paired with 2080ti would struggle maintaining 1080p 60 fps.
Jaguar was worse than the failed FX line amd cpu and when zen 1 was released, the IPC leap from FX to ryzen was like 50%, and then for zen 2 we had another 13% or something IPC increase.
So for consoles, the IPC increase alone from jaguar to zen 2 would be close to 100% that's still not counting clockspeed differences, and software optimizations... And as I said before, rendering tricks and tech.
Your downplaying of the reality suggest you know little about computing hardware.
