Xbox Series X vs equivalent PC
I got bored and decided to go on PC part picker and come up with this:

https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/PRgsjp

The parts might not be fully compatible as it was all thrown together in about 5 minutes. I just built this out of curiosity. I tried to pick the cheapest options available for the parts included although maybe a few costs could be cut here and there. I didn't include a controller as I understand some people wouldn't consider that a necessity. That being said, the overall cost right now comes to almost £1600!

Can somebody please explain to my why someone would build this for gaming when a console just as powerful will be available for about 1/3rd the price by the end of year? I can't see the price of PC components dropping that much within 9 months. I am well aware of the advantages PC gaming offers (I play primarily on PC) but does that really justify all the extra money? It might also be worth mentioning that 5 years from now the PC would probably struggle to run games to the same standard as the Xbox.

Rather than upgrade my PC it might just be cheaper to by a console lol. This has been bugging me for a while now so I'd be interested to hear what you guys think.

Yes.

It's a PC.

Everybody needs a PC. This way, you buy a PC, and can game on it. And there's plenty of games out right now, so its not like xbox has a cornucopia of games only for that console. Also pretty sure your math is off if you think an xbox is cheaper per preformance.

True, most people need a PC but not a high performance PC. Most people use their PCs for browsing the web, typing up word documents, photoshop etc. - tasks that don't require a very good PC. Most people I know who own a high performance PC built it with gaming in mind.

I'm assuming most people who need a PC already own one. If PC components stay as expensive as they currently are, I think it might make more sense to buy a console for gaming and keep the PC for everything else rather than upgrade a PC to next gen specs. When a mid-gen console refresh releases, the old console can be sold and the new one can be bought for maybe a couple hundred £ more.

I'll use my current PC as an example. I would need to upgrade my 980ti to a 2080 super which costs about £700 right now. Minus the £200 that I would get back from the second hand 980ti and thats £500 for the graphics card upgrade. The 2080 super would bottleneck my i5 6600 at the resolution I play at so I would need to upgrade that too. The r7 3700x costs about £260 right now. Minus the £100 that I would get back from the i5 and thats a £160 upgrade for the CPU. This CPU wouldn't work with my b150m motherboard so I would need to upgrade that too. A decent b450m max motherboard would probably cost around £70 right now. Minus the £40 that I would optimistically get back from my old motherboard and thats £30 for the motherboard upgrade. My current sata SSD won't cut it so I'd need a pcie 4.0 SDD. The Sabrent 1TB one costs roughly £160. I'm assuming an OEM windows key for the new mobo would cost about £10.

Add that all up and that's £860 if I were to upgrade my PC now. Do you think the Xbox would cost anywhere near that? Of course, these were rough estimates and prices are expected to drop but I don't think they'll drop by that much. I'm not saying I'm going to buy a console, I'm still not sure yet, but it's just something to think about.
How do you know that xbox series x will be as powerful as Ryzen 3700x and rtx 2080 super?
3700x costs 290 and 2080 super starts from 720(GIGABYTE RTX 2080 SUPER) i just checked prices in my country shops. Which mean a console witth a cpu and graphics card like that will cost more than 1000 because you also add the ram hdd/ssd and psu price on that. It will be impossible to release a console with those specs and cost 500. For me that i have 1700 and gtx 970 if these consoles are true(which i doubt) if let say is true then it will cost me only 720 at this time of this post to beat xbox x. And it will be already be much better than ps5 which have weaker cpu and gpu. Question is what difference will those games that are currently in development for pc and xbox only like Hell blade 2, State of decay 3 e.t.c compared to current microsoft games that releases on pc and xbox one? Yes graphics might be little better on max settings but most games on pc alreasd have amazing almost movie quality graphics on max settings 1440.

Not this again, please. We totally respect your 15FPS 3.5GB card. We know every single inch of it by this point. Could you, please, just stop?

This already happens on PC. You can play CSGO with a controller. But if you ask the community about split lobbies they will probably just call you dumb for playing a competitive game with a controller.
Sure. Wanna show me your Tekken 7 keyboard skills?
I have little Tekken 7 skill. But I think Tekken 7 could be played well with a keyboard. All the buttons you would use for Tekken are digital. I play Streets of Rage better on keyboard than a controller so Tekken may be the same way.

It sure could if you had keyboard with NKRO support, but never as good or as comfortable as on a controller. Hence it's not "a competitive game", it's "that competitive game" you were talking about. Absolutely does depend on the genre.

A few things.

1. Consumer GPUs are quite overpriced right now.
2. Microsoft gets a far better deal by buying the APUs in massive quantities.
3. Microsoft will sell the Xbox SX at a loss.
4. These are 7nm+ next-gen GPUs. You cannot compare their cost to current-gen GPUs. It's like saying the PS4 couldn't cost less than $600 because PS3 was $600 and the PS4 is more powerful than it.

Nvidia and AMD will release a new lineup of cards in the later half of this year. They will offer a far better cost to performance ratio.

Don't waste your time trying to reason SHREDDER. He's been talking nonsense for years now, especially about his precious GTX 970.

I’m actually gonna laugh so hard if his gpu died after he read this comment.

What if it's one of those movies, when in the end MC realises he's been long dead? Only it was his GTX 970 dead, and all this time he's been imagining things.

Yes they are overpriced because amd not have high end gpus as powerful as Nvidia. But now that Intel will also start releasing graphics cards that will be as strong as nvidia high end or even better nvidia will be forced to drop the prices. Intel will also need to make graphics cards as good as nvidias or better but at a much lower price to sell well. And this will be good for all of us. The days of Nvidia overpriced are coming to an end. However i buy only Nvidia graphics cards . I have never bought amd.

I seriously doubt Intel will have anything that can even come close to competing in the high end for many years. Maybe the new console hardware is a sign of good things to come from AMD but Nvidia probably has an ace up their sleeve just in case.

Nope, the new sunny cove (or is it golden cove? Don't remember) architecture already leaked to have +50% ipc from skylake, the only issue Intel have is that their 10 nm fab couldn't produce anything on acceptable yield.

Depending on amd own progress, late 2021-2022 would see a bloody cpu war.

I thought we were talking about Intel GPUs. As far as CPUs it seems like Intel is going to struggle for a few years until they can actually get a new architecture out to market. They aren't going to be able to run 14nm+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ forever.

Current consensus think that Intel GPU division isn't even after the gaming market as their end goal, rather they want to compete on the HPC market.

Yea I believe that. Maybe go copy their APU onto a dedicated card and sell them as uber low end GPUs as well. Apparently they have some neato tech that would allow the APU to work in conjunction with the GPU and split the work load in an intelligent way which would be cool. I always felt like integrated graphics on high end CPUs was a waste of silicon. I'd rather just have more cores. Cuz anyone who is spending hundreds of dollars on a CPU is probably going to buy a GPU anyway. It's the same way they don't bother bundling stock coolers with high end CPUs because they know nobody who buys an $800 CPU is using a stock cooler.
