Connect speakers through monitor or PC?

Is there any difference between connecting speakers via 3.5mm aux through my monitor's output compared to directing through the back of the computer?

you dont plug speakers into your monitor you plug an audio cable into the monitor which goes in the back of the pc

your monitor has builtin speakers or you can use external speakers

external speakers have better sound usually and you can make the volume louder

my monitors speakers arent that great and they sound tinny as well as dont get that loud so i have external speakers plugged in

you can also use the monitor speakers without an audio cable if you connect the monitor via hdmi or displayport vga or dvi dont carry audio so thats when you need an audio cable

My monitor is connected to my computer via display port from my GTX 1080. I have external speakers and my monitor has a 3.5mm audio output connector that i can use to connect to my external speakers instead of directly to the back of my PC and play audio either way

(I was never planning on using my monitor's built in speakers they sound horrible)

so you can only plug your speakers into your pc not your monitor

but you can use both your monitor speakers and external speakers win10 lets you have multiple audio devices

in my case i have 3, front pc audio, back pc audio are separate devices so thats 2 then my monitor speakers is 3

you can have different apps use different devices, i have my speakers for radio and monitor speakers for all other sounds

If using HDMI or DP, you can output audio through this to the Monitor if the monitor has speakers or a 3.5mm stereo in/out pass-through.

On many monitors you can then plug headphones or speakers into the monitor 3.5mm stereo Out to feed audio from hdmi/dp to external audio device.

Or you can use your motherboard audio and do your connection for this a few ways...

Plug headphones or speakers directly to the motherboard side audio out ( line out)

Or connect a 3.5mm stereo male to male cable from mother line out to the line in on the monitor, then connect headphones to the line out on the monitor. Which allows a closer plug in for your headphones.

If you have external speakers just use the motherboard onboard audio and plug them into the Line Out on motherboard rear. If you have a 5.1 or 7.1 speaker config that uses 3 or 4 3.5mm plugs, refer to motherboard manual on how exactly you would connect that amd enable 5.1 or 7.1 within your OS for when using such a config.

It's usually going to be best to make use of your motherboard audio instead of gpu audio. As the gpu audio by itself doesn't offer any decent settings like the motherboard audio would. Gpu audio is meant as a pass through to monitor onboard speakers for ease of use, or to pass onto a digital surround receiver which the receiver would have adjustable settings for treble, bass, equalizer, etc...

always best to use the direct source rather than pass thru
that way instead of wasting the pass thru, u can have another device to separate your pc sounds

the fewer items messing with the sound signal the better the quality

sound card -> speaker (or amp -> speaker) = best

gpu -> receiver -> tv -> arc back to receiver -> speakers = worst
with digital signal its bits can get shifted if each device changes the volume/bass/treble ect.. and add minor delays

most monitors have very poor amplifier and speakers, and designed for headphone not amplified speakers

get a good set of amplified speakers or a digital receiver and 5.1+ set of bookshelves for best sound

I prefer using my speakers with the audio out on my motherboard.
While i have a monitor with audio out, if i conecz my speakers over that, the max volume is way lower then when connected to my pc and the sound quality sounds a bit worse.

At least in my experience.

I use the gpu audio / monitor jack with headphones on my linux workstation, sounds great to me - have not tried with speakers at all so can’t comment on that
