Should I save my files if I'm resetting my PC?
My friends reset their PC and said everything was fast for time now so I wanted to give it a try but I want to keep most of my games and files and I don't want to download everything back because I got a data cap.

I just recently update to the new version I just wanted to see if I should keep my files or just do a fresh install.

Negative.

If you recently updated to the new version, you already have a fresh copy. Don't need to reset it again. That's pretty much just repeating a long process of what you have already done.

Rather you are most likely missing the motherboard drivers.

Do you know what motherboard your PC has? Go to it's website > support > downloads. Update your BIOS and Drivers to the latest version.

Do the same for your graphics card drivers.

Windows 10 doesn't always use the correct drivers upon a fresh installation or new build upgrade, rather it attempts to use it's own native ones. Some of those might just get it to run, but lacks performance. Finding and installing the right drivers will greatly improve your system.

If you on the other hand believe there is something wrong with your OS build installation, such as being unstable, crashing all the time, etc.

Right-click on your Windows Start button > Windows Powershell (Admin)

Under the Powershell, type the following command and press enter:

sfc /scannow

This will scan your Window's system files and compare them to the latest build on Microsoft, checking for corruptions and missing files, then attempts to repair them.

If Windows 10, the "reset" gives you an option to keep files outside of the Operating System.

However, what you should consider instead is upgrading the build.

Under the search box, type "winver" (without the quotes) and press enter.

What Version and OS Build are you currently on?
It should say Version 1909 (OS Build 18363.720) or later

If not, then go to the Microsoft > Download Windows 10 > Update now
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

Use the "Update Assistant".

This will fresh install the latest build. Again it will give you the option to keep files.
I just recently update to the new version I just wanted to see if I should keep my files or just do a fresh install.
i say: save your files anyway(clean install/ reset). it is always better imo
I'd first run Disk Cleanup and also System Restore and wipe all of that junk out before resetting the OS.

Its a laptop. So just update my drivers and all?
What you mean by "It's a laptop" ?

You handle everything about it the same as a desktop.

Just do like AZZA suggested and you should be ok.

I would do the sfc /scannow first though. For that, launch CMD via the Run As Admin option.

I would also run Disk Cleanup and tick all the boxes (except for Downloads) and click ok to wipe all the useless temp file junk from the OS.

Bios update and Drivers will be on the laptop makers website in their support section for your exact model of laptop.
I was just saying its a laptop not a full on gaming desktop because AZZA asked whats the motherboard. I did the Disk Cleanup already, BIOS was recently updated aswell
Laptops still have a motherboard and bios. For laptops we still call them motherboard drivers, because that is correct.
So just update everything to the latest version pretty much?

Basically yes.

Do all the Windows Updates until no more are left to do. Reboot as needed.

Then go download each driver your PC would need, just the latest version of each. Then uninstall all the old drivers via Control Panel > Programs and Features, rebooting as needed. Once they are all removed, install all the latest ones.
btw should I remove the previous Windows Version or keep it cause I unchecked that just incase of anything would happen later on
Yea remove it. It's junk. You can't revert back to it. But Win10 always puts the old OS there when it does a feature update.

You can remove this via Settings/Storage, Disk Cleanup run as Administrator, or a third party cleaner like PrivaZer. Before you remove it, you can open it up and examine your Downloads, Pictures, etc to see if there's anything else you want to keep. If so, you can simply drag and drop.

Just to clarify: a "clean installation" removes everything, including personal files and apps, and places the remnants in Windows.old. This is what you were referencing, right?
