New SSD, low read/write speeds.
So I got the Samsung 860 EVO, it has advertised speeds of 550MB/ read and write. But I can't seem to get really close to that. When I first plugged it in I realized that it was plugged into the gigabyte 3 instead of the gigabyte 6. So I switched it over and it improved slightly, but still not enough...

I'm getting 406.8 read speeds, and 304.9 write speeds. Even userbenchmark shows that it's at a 33 percentile which is below average. Why is it doing that and how can I improve speeds?

hmm well that's good that it's set to AHCI already.

do you have Samsung Magician installed? use the benchmark tool in that if you do and post the results

do you have AHCI mode enabled in the bios for the SSD?

make sure it's not set to IDE mode

I honestly have no clue, but I'll open the BIOS and check it out and possibly change it to AHCI if it's not at that already.

In the bios it shows that the SATA mode selection is at AHCI.

holy ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ♥♥♥♥. You were a tad bit late on that, I just found out about that software and my score went from 400MB write/read speeds to 3973 read speeds and 3789 write speeds. That's literally NVME speeds for crying out loud. Damn, either way thanks for responding. I honestly didn't even knew there was software, and firmware updates for a damn SSD....

those speeds are not right.. you shouldn't be getting read and write speeds much higher than 550 for a SATA SSD.. but yes it is a helpful tool for managing your Samsung SSD

Well here's a picture,

I tried doing userbenchmark and it randomly freezes but keeps going and at the end it says,

" Relative performance n/a - RAM cached drive detected" and my gaming, and desktop score is heavily effected. My gaming is usually above 110 and my desktop is right above 100.

I heard that rapid mode in that software can be the cause of the issue, should I not have that on?

i personally don't use rapid mode.

it uses ram as cache to speed up drive performance

So I turned it off, and now it's at 393.9 read speed.. I am honestly so confused on what the hells going on at this point.

you are running an older motherboard if i remember correctly?

make sure your chipset drivers are up to date if so

well everything is up to date, since I had to update the BIOS to 1603 from 1403 because the i7 4790K won't work with the z87 boards without a bios update. Now I did do a userbenchmark and it says it's running at 48 percentile which is a lot better, but the read and write scores still are at around 300 ish. The same as my 20 dollar SSD... this is depressing.

what motherboard do you have?

have you tried one of the other sata 6gbps ports?

tried a different Sata cable?

just trying to figure out what is going on here. hate to see such a good drive get limited like that

also check to make sure your disk activity is low or non existent while benching as that can affect results

if this is your OS drive then try removing all other drives to see if it's not a bandwith issue or something

I got the Asus Maximus Formula VI, z87 and I guess I can try using other Sata cables. And I'll try a different Gbps 6 port and I'll get back to you.

I'm literally done... honest to God. I spent 4 hours setting everything up, to find out just because I unplugged all my other hard drives my OS fails? It keeps telling me boot0: error. I've plugged in all my other hdds and changed different sata plugs and same error. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥... 😤

that sux dude.. if you intend to use the 860 evo as a boot drive leave only that plugged in and begin the OS installation again.. once finished install magician and run the test before installing any other software. i would advise updating windows and installing all needed drivers to get a real world result.

Well I guess I don't know what else to do. I've reinstalled Windows twice, I've switched sata cables and ports. I reset CMOS, removed other HDD's. Don't really know what else to do. Seems as if the read and write speeds are the same as my 20 dollar 120GB SSD I bought from Microcenter almost a year back... as shown here.

Current test with new SSD: https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/15159937

Old SSD: https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/14252236

I guess the only noticeable difference would be the fact that the SSD boots into Windows even faster, and my desktop feels a tad bit faster... What a shame. :/

i honestly don't know what else to suggest.. i had no issues with my 850 evo after runnin AHCI mode on a 6gbps SATA port. it even ran fine before i updated chipset drivers so i have run out of ideas. if you have the ram maybe use rapid mode and see if the performance increase is worth the memory sacrifice
