Laptop turns off by itself randomly
Hello there,

I am the same guy who got a problem with the hard drive which I was getting 100% disk usage on task manager.

Regarding the hard drive which was damaged with a caution health, I got replaced it for a new one with good health but the problem still happens. The laptop turns off byitself and sometimes it reaches at 100% disk usage.

Is there any fix method to fix this? Thanks.

It's very typical for laptop cpu's thermal compound to dry out after a few years. This goes for the video chip as well. Symptoms are: the fan running high even when you aren't doing anything special and the system acting sluggish or shutting down unexpectedly.

I've had to redo the thermal compound on a number of 3-5 year old laptops, the old compound was hard and brittle. I typically use Arctic silver, be sure to follow Arctic's instructions.

After redoing the cpu and video chips, the laptops typically run silent and even games don't raise the fan speed much.

I can't predict accumulated damage from long-term overheating; if the laptop won't power up anymore then things have likely gone beyond easy fixes.

One additional reminder for all laptop owners is that after a few years the battery will start having a hard time charging. This means the battery and the charger will be working harder and generating more heat then they should which can aggravate laptop overheating. You can't fix the battery, all you can do is replace it every few years.

Heat is death for the hard drive as well so laptop gamers really need to try to keep things as cool as possible. The free HDTUNE can display HDD temps for most hard drives (not usually for SSDs though).

How does it turn off exactly? Does it randomly completely turn off? Does this only happen on battery or also when connected to a power outlet? Could you try running the laptop without the battery? Check the temps of the machine also with software like HWmonitor.

What is the make and model of the laptop?

The HDD running at 100% is normal, you want your stuff to load as fast as possible right? Unless it is doing this always and it's hurting the machine's performance nothing is wrong here.

probably overheating versus dying battery.

-Most of the time is when I am playing games, it turns off automatically without any warning.

- It turns off more times while playing games.

- I have removed the battery and was overheating. I will see if the laptop turns off even if the battery is out from the laptop. The laptop is always on battery and plugged in to get more fps.

- Monitor shows these temps:

CPU: 48. Max 72
Hard drive: 36. Max 37
GPU: 52. Max 53

Fangbook 4 Xtreme

probably overheating versus dying battery.

The laptop smells a bit if it's burning.

EDIT: I have tried removing the battery and it turns off automatically while playing.

You shouldn't smell anything burning. The laptop should never become that hot, it will shut down long before the plastic starts melting.

Are those temps you messured while gaming or just random on the desktop? Open the temp monitor and start gaming in windowed mode, keep an eye on the temps.

When I quit the game the temps decrease a lot.

Well of course they decrease, since you closed out what's putting such high load on the cpu & gpu.

Trying having CPUID HWMonitor running and run Unigine Heaven on high or extreme. Let Heaven run in a loop and see how hot the system gets

The laptop doesn't turn on anymore. Anyone knows what could happen? Thanks.

Dust makes a nasty smell when it's heated up really hot / burning.

I'm just gonna go out on a limb here and say you probably severely overheated whatever cpu you had inside the laptop. Some of the better made ones have a thermal safety built in that will literally shut off the entire system just slightly before permanent damage sets in--if it's working properly. If you (or anyone else) inadvertantly fiddled with the settings at any point in time then that may have been the burning smell you mentioned picking up at some point.

Thermal damage can occur to any component inside a dekstop/laptop if you don't really know what you are doing and once it has occured you are looking at a fire hazard or a nice new, sometimes very expensive, paper weight in the shape of a desktop/laptop.

"Some of the better ones"

This stuff is build in to the CPU.. Any CPU made in the last 10 years or so will do this.

Anyone knows how to deal with the ovetheating the laptop? It's not normal that it turns off by itself.

I have a cooling pad below of it but is not enough.

You could try cleaning it out.
If youve had it for a while, chances are that its packed with dust.

I have found the issue. I have opened the laptop as soon as the laptop turned off and I can notice that the cpu and the fans cooling system are really hot.

What can i do now? Thanks for the help.

.. Hot to you does not mean hot to the computer. Laptops are fine up to 90c.

Monitor the temps while gaming or running a benchmark and wait for it to shut down. If the GPU/CPU temp touches 100c it's most likely overheating. Clean the laptop, that is all you can do about it, if it's overheating and clena the laptop isn't made for gaming.

I have the screenshots above of the temps while playing. They are 90c for cpu and 80 for gpu.

Here I leave screenshots about a performance test of my system.
