Chrome ran out of memory?
Hi,

I have 32GB's of ram. I was doing some testing in chrome with about 100 tabs of youtube videos all playing and this happened:

https://imgur.com/a/TRGH1h6

Why does this happen? Its the latest version of chrome. Chrome and OS are 64bit. I am running windows 10.

Ram: 4x 8GB, 3000Mhz, Corsair Vengeance RGB. XMP is enabled.
If you need any more specs, they are on my profile.

One would assume it would be pretty hard for me to run out of ram lol...
How ever, in the screenshots, it clearly shows im not using more then 10gbs of ram...

Cheers,
THG

Maybe it's not RAM memory.
Maybe it ran out of GPU memory.
That happens to me when I open multiple 3D models on Sketchfab.

The 4GB figure looks suspiciously like it is limited by 32-bit memory addressing somewhere in the app. If you want a definite answer ask Chrome support.

Id like to see it try and run out of GPU memory when i have dual 1080 tis.... 24GB's of Vram...

The images also show 3% - 2% on the cards...

Google chrome itself is 64bit however it limits how much memory individual tabs can consume
How much free space do you have on your SSD?
When I opened few YouTube videos I noticed that free space on my SSD started decreasing, and after closing videos free space increases.
Check your free space on SSD before opening chrome and while 100 videos are running.

64-bit is just a compile option. Chrome will be a mishmash of several libraries and dll's. There is no guarantee about anything. It's highly probable that several libraries just have a single version, which will be 32-bit.

This issue is exactly what the error message tells you. Your Google Chrome runs out of memory. This is a problem because you will see this message despite having more than enough memory (RAM) on your computer. A lot of Chrome users face this issue out of nowhere. There are no warnings before this issue and there aren’t any specific hints that can help you predict the problem before happening. You might see this error on specific pages or it might be completely random. The error isn’t related to a specific website. This issue, if keeps happening, won’t let you browse normally and will keep showing this page on either random or specific websites.

That's not how much VRAM a 1080ti has.
A single 1080ti has 11GB of VRAM, double that an you have 22GB; but SLI doesn't pool resources, so you only have 11GB usable.
Still, more than most games will ever use, you don't have as much as you think you do.
You probably have too many addons in chrome. The more addons/plugins you put in chrome the more ram it uses for each tab. And then spawn tons of tabs and your ram usage can go through the roof. Did you open task manager for windows and actually look at windows ram usage? Is windows showing you actually are using 32GB of ram? It's possible. I have seen chrome run up around 18-20 GB of system ram used just with 60-70 tabs open on 3 screens before doing research for a computer build for someone. 100 tabs with lots of plugins and it wouldn't be unheard of for chrome to suck up 32GB of ram. Try it again and watch windows task manager and get back to us with how much memory windows is reporting you're using. If it is showing you're using up to 32GB in task manager then you're just spawning too many tabs... open less tabs.

I missed that, oops. But it looks like in the screenshots that ram usage is still rising.. I wonder if it's using more and more over time.

Another suggestion is with chrome open press Shift+Escape and bring up chrome's own built in task manager and click once at the top of the memory footprint column to switch it to highest first and see which tab is using the most ram. And the overall in-chrome ram usage. Maybe you have one tab that's running away with ram usage. I've seen some sites do that before.
ok after saying earlier id never seen this, decided to see if i could recreate it and i just had happen also, had a lot of tabs open to cause it, (probably at-least a 100), loads of memory spare (this was on my main rig so 32GB in quad channel over 8 x 4GB sticks), refreshed and it went away, but it did need refresh on every tab, very odd, perhaps its an issue with a new build of chrome ?

maybe because thats exactly what i did to cause it.

I have 170gbs available on my NVME.

My mistake, and from what iv just learned about. The 1080 tis cannot transfer too well between cards so they basically have a copy on each so i do indeed have "11" usable. Thanks for pointing this out to me.

The only way you could have 22GB usable Vram with two 1080 Ti's is by not using SLI but by using "Multi-GPU" with DirectX-12. Which.. sadly, no one is coding in to their games and no one has yet to implement, even though we have DirectX-12 GPU's that support it and Windows 10 that supports DirectX-12. Some day it may be possible. But right now, not yet. Right now most games are still DirectX-10 or DirectX-11, which is limited to what ever Vram one of the cards has and copies it to the second one for SLI/CrossFire. Kind of off topic, but just thought I'd mention it.
