I purchased the original a few months after it released and still have it as a back up. It's worn in places and missing 2 feet/pad things on the bottom but it still works perfectly. I'd happily consider purchasing the new version if/when my current G502 fails.

Is the size a mirror of the old MX518, or is it bigger as I found the original, more than a tad too small.

Yes with the new Hero sensor I would say it would be a very good choice.

I also have an original one still going on my linux workstation in the basement, if I cleaned all the hairs out of the scroll wheel it would probably work much better - but the fact that it still works to this day is a telling tale in itself.

It's just marketing. It's very disappointing that it does not come with Powerplay and Lightspeed Wireless technology.

Well, it's getting the upgraded sensor treatment. So if you liked the initial design it's basically going to be the same thing with a much better sensor.
