VRM and temperature tracking
So I’ve been curious, is there a way to track VRM temperature (the heat sink towards the left of the CPU socket, for instance the heat sink on a ds3p-usb3) because I would like to get a little bit more information regarding temps.

Thanks for any further help :)

Yes, you can install temperature monitoring software such as HWMonitor or Open Hardware Monitor to monitor these temps. However these sensors are often hard to identify and software loves to report the wrong temperature.

Hey Omega, thanks for the swift reply

If the temps are not correct than I shall shy away from tracking it

But am I safe using a FX 8350 with a 970A-DS3P?? Because it states that it’s compatible, but it’s a 4Ghz 125W chip??

It's a dirt cheap board, I wouldn't rely on it.

what cooler?
if its a tower air cooler, mount the fan as low as possible to push air under the heatsink and over the vrm heatsink on the board

4+1 vrm confnig is not the best for overclocking fx or 125w cpus
the board has no vrm temp sensor, each vrm has its own temp sensors and will thermal throttle

Ok thanks you Omega

I’ll go to a 990FX motherboard soon as possible

Hey,

I have a Hyper 212 EVO LED Turbo, with 1 fab for intake and 1 for taking air out (I can’t spell the actual word) so my cpu temps are fine

Maybe just start staving up for something modern instead. The FX 8350 is 7 years old now. And these high-end boards are sold for $150 or more, for $150 you already have a modern Ryzen 2600 which heavily outperforms this old CPU and then for another $150 you can buy a B450 mobo and RAM.

There are no good FX boards to be had anymore anyways. It's time to just retire it and move on. 8350 @ 5GHZ still won't compete with a 4790K at stock speeds. A cheap Ryzen 1600 or better would run circles around it

No, most motherboards dont have VRM sensor. You need an Infrared Thermometer Gun.

Please, refrain from claiming things about hardware u know nothing about. FX-8350 @ 5GHZ performs worse than stock FX-8350 with slightly OCd RAM and CPU-NB. There's no point in cores running "sry I'm waiting for data" faster lol.

Performs worse when oc'ed lol yea ok...

You're discussing a topic that has been debated for over 5 years.

According to tomshardware / overclockers forums (I'd say the top resources for OC knowledge)

The only accurate way to measure VRM temperature is via thermal gun / camera

Infact if you look up any professional OC / stress test they typically provide a thermal map / gun temps when showcasing chipset / mobo benchmarks.

And to the dude who said, "performs worse when oc'ed lol yea ok..."

I don't care if your cpu package is 26c. If you're VRMs (typically the first component to overheat on a POS mobo) are overheating your machine is either going to shut down and fail, or you like most modern mobo's. It will start cutting power to your components to reduce heat.

REGARDLESS if you turn APM, C-states off etc.

You're no Bad Motha, you're a brain dead motha

**EDIT**

run the game with your case open, make sure you're grounded (have like one hand on the case) and put your fingers/hands near the vrms. If you touch them and it burns...you don't need a thermal camera to tell you that you're pushing it too hard.
