Yes, the i5 8400 will not work on a 100 or 200 series motherboard.
would be better if i go for i5-7600?

I'd say still go with the 8400 and invest in a new motherboard as certain games tend to eat 4 cores for breakfast so you better off going with a 8400 or maybe even a 9600k if you want to overclock

looking at the pricing of used i5-7600s, $200 is a bit much... Hopefully you can find cheaper.

In contrast I just upgraded my son's i3-6100 with a 2600 / b450 board for $210, may be worth the extra expense to get the DDR4 ram as far as value for your dollar.

Sell the mobo and i3 7100, if you went Ryzen 2600 / B450 you'll still have Ryzen 3xxx and Ryzen 4xxx supported through bios updates on the B450 mobo.

If you insist on keeping your current platform it would be i7 7700k or bust, imho you'd be wasting your time with the quad i5.

More recent and some older games are pushing the quads %100 now which isn't the best place to be.
It depends on the games you want to play. An i5-7600 is going to play lightweight games well due to its high single thread speed.

But given that the i5-8400 is likely to be cheaper and has 2 more cores that are just as fast as the i5-7600, that's what I'd go for. i5-8400+mobo might not be much more expensive than i5-7600. And you'll be able to sell off your current mobo and cpu. So in fact it could be cheaper !

I've said it before and quads have had their day ^.

Ryzen 2600 ^ is more appealing with overclocking and future upgrading.
