How much VRAM do I need for gaming?
I’m thinking of getting a GTX 1050ti 4GB or GTX 1060 3GB.

The amount of VRAM is not viable way to directly compare graphics card performance. In your case GTX 1060 is quite a bit more powerful despite less VRAM.
I would go for GTX 1060 6 GB or RX 580 8GB though if you can afford them, will last you longer and they are currently pretty cheap because of new RTX 2060 that rivals GTX 1070 Ti performance for $350.

if that is your only choice i would say the 1060 3gb.. but if you can save up a bit more the 6gb version would be better

If you choose the 1060, be sure to have 8-16GB RAM
But even with 3GB the 1060 is still better.

vram ammount on the gtx 1060 is not the only difference in the cards
the 3g is cut down on cores and tmus

1060/3 is better in terms of performance. But if u want to get everything at once - find yourself some RX 580/4.

GTX 1060 3 GB is better than GTX 1050 Ti. No doubts. The latter is lower than AMD RX 470 while former is relatively equal to RX 480.

If you're on a budget and want to get into gaming then I would suggest you to go for AMD RX 570/580 either as its better value for your money

Is it not so?

It is in every way except VRAM buffer, because as long as a game is not exceeding the limit then it will always outperform the 1050 Ti by a fair bit. VRAM isn't the most important part of the card, and more VRAM does not equate to more performance, as we'll likely see when the Radeon VII releases, as it's supposed to have a 16GB HBM2 memory buffer but only expected to match the 2080 8GB.
