slave drive mbr or gpt ?

Ive been having issues with my ssd and sometimes cant boot into windows..

I swapped it out for an old mechanical hdd which couldnt boot to windows, instead of installing windows I decided to change back to the ssd..
Im now at windows but, my slave drive is 'Not Initialised' within disk manager..

"You must initialise a disk before logical disk manager can access it
use the following partition style for the selected disk
MBR (Master Boot Record)
GPT (GUID Partition Table)"

Which do I use to display the drive as a slave

When my bios didnt recognise the ssd I chose to use default settings and tried other settings on the bios hoping it would read the ssd, could this have caused the slave to need initialised ?

GPT, unless you require MBT for legacy reasons.

Thanks, as theres data on the disk, will choosing GPT just allow windows to recognise the drive, or would it format it ?
I need to keep the data on it..

If Windows asks you to initialise the disk, then there is no data on it. If there was, it's most likely lost.

Legacy reasons, like compatibility with other operating systems accessing the drive that are not able to handle GPT partitions.

I hit OK on GPT to see if windows would recognise the drive but I got an error popup stating...

"Virtual Disk Manager

The specified disk is not convertible because the size is less than the minimum size required for GPT disks"

So, the only option is MBR, will this confuse windows into thinking its a boot drive and cause boot problems ?

Just use MBR, GPT is for very large drives. Just use whatever you want it doesn't matter. You can have as many drives ad you want. The OS drive selected as the boot drive in bios is all that matters

Sounds like your harddrive failed if you can't create a GPT partition.

Nonsense. While GPT can handle larger partitions than MBT it has quite a few other advantages over MBT that makes it superior in pretty much any way, with the exception of legacy OS reasons.

Looks like it, I restarted into the bios and it isnt recognised in there.
Its listed in device manager but as unknown device under disk drives..

Ah well, I'll just buy a new one ...

Isn't master and slave drive only something for IDE? =P

there are no slave sata device. they are all master. boot order is set at bios.

only in pata devices do you have a master device and 'salves'.

Yeah, just like chief said, im just used to the old systems of the past with the ide cable..

Anyway, I shutoff the comp a few times and restarted a few times also but had no luck with the storage drive showing..

Until

I updated my gpu driver and it asked me to restart after completing the installation, after the restart the storage drive is showing as normal..

I'll monitor to see how it goes, thanks.

What advantages? Only real, please. Not like ability to create hundred partitions.
