Certain laptop keys not working (MSI)
I have a MSI GV62-7RD which I bought roughly two years ago. And it's specific keys like 'R, F, C, 8, 9, Backspace' that won't work. I have to spam it in order for the letter to appear on the screen. It's usually 1/10 times. I've done some research online and apparently it's a pretty common issue among MSI laptops. I have tried the following:

-Restarting PC
-Updating Drivers
-Uninstalling and Re-installing drivers
-Installed SteelSeries Engine 3 and uninstalling

Does anyone know a solution to this? The only thing I haven't tried was resetting the EC, which I will do as a last resort if all else fails.

replace its keyboard
not difficult on most laptops
should be 2-6 screws with keyboard symbol on the bottom of the laptop
gently lift and unclip the ribbon cable
reverse for installing new one

edit: maybe not, its burried in the laptop

For almost any other keyboard I would normally suggest a good cleaning--however, most laptop keyboard assemblies simply do not hold up to any added stress from even gentle cleaning. Thus it's often easier to just replace the keyboard entirely if any part of it isn't functioning properly. Probably not what you want to hear but I've seen laptop keys pop off entirely and had to inform clients of bad news even after giving them a disclaimer (q-tips and alcohol swabs were used in that instance--that laptop had been abused/neglected by the owner and they ended up replacing the unit sometime later).

Known issue with that model. Seems to be a hardware issue.

Come to MSI all guns blazing, find CEO of laptop division of whatever they call it, chop his secretary's head with the very same keyboard, then stick the keyboard up his arse, turn it clockwise until he bleeds, and then yell at him "Red means gaming, right?!"
Or you can just buy a new keyboard on AliExpress/TaoBao and replace yours. Less fun, sure, but works just as good as the first approach.

Full points on that focused, expressive and ultimately clever use of extreme imaginary violence there Snow.

There's a thread about MSI screwing up the RX 570 cooling system right next to this one. With the way MSI treats their customers we end up seeing violence in things MSI call Monday.

I called MSI when my gl 63 8se laptops m and c keys quit working, I had only owned it around 4 -6 months when it happened and it has no damage. When I got a technician (of sorts) on the phone and told him my problem, he informed me that it was a known problem with (at least) my particular model. He then advised me to send it in to have the "problem corrected". I told him he could blow and that I felt lucky that it worked as well as it did. I would be damned to send it back out even though the keys are messed up. I went and got a ducky mechanical, it really makes up for the steel series tablet keys anyway. I guess what I am saying is MSI really does not do things like the way they used to.

I know I am late to this thread , and I had the same problem, numerous keys not working the majority of the time then would work rarely. I have the GE62 7RD version and the keyboard is a huge pain to replace with the same thing happening down the road with the new keyboard, so I did a little investigating inside my laptop and after a few tries that seemed to work and got maybe two days clean typing told me it was not a software problem. It was a physical HARDWARE problem as in a broken connector cable or a crack. If you open your laptop up it may be like mine and the keyboard ribbon is bent in half so it can be plugged in...(very poor design). What I did and it has been working flawlessly now for over three months no problems at all, was take the ribbon out of the connector and where the folded crease is I used a very thing piece of sticky on one side foam maybe 1/16 or 1/8th of an inch thick and put the sticky side right on the inside of that crease and made sure it stuck well and reconnected the ribbon. the ribbon now will not be able to fold in half perfectly and stays sort of rounded at that crease. I then carefully closed up the case and the connection or crack is now always making contact. I think the design flaw was making a ribbon cable to long and having to make the fold in it to connect to the mother board. Hope this helps someone as it was driving me Crazy!!! Please let me know if this works for you. I typed this comment with the same keyboard!

Thank you very much for your sharing. I am having the same issue with my q,r and e keys and I am gonna try out your method soon. But before that, I got some questions to ask.

First, I am quite sure that this is a hardware issue and none of the reinstalling driver stuff will work. And I also found that the problem will come back after some intensive gaming, by intensive, I meant playing game with high cpu,gpu usage that will generate lots of heat. So, I would like to ask in your case, have you had some intensive gaming during the last 3 months and the problem still never came back?

Second, I also checked out the following youtube video about dissembling a model similar to mine. I can see in the model in the video at 21:37, there is a '3M pad' in the middle of the bent keyboard connector ribbon. Is that what you are talking about in your comment that will solve the keyboard problem?

If a person needs help with any of these things, they should probably not open their laptop (that costs as much or more than some peoples cars) unless they are confident in their ability. Let me tell you something else, MSI does not make laptops as tough as they used to. They cut down on plastic to make vents, but do not reinforce for rigidity, the plastic bottom is flimsy, so much so, i do not move it unless i have to. The m and c keys quit working within the first 9 months, when I contacted MSI, the person I eventually reached informed me that the model I bought had a problem with varying keys (depending on model) , he also informed me that all of the affected models had steel series keyboards. He offered to let me send it in, and i asked him what I would do while I did not have it, he (of course) answered, "I dont know but your computer only has the year warranty so you should send it back to get it fixed", to which I said, "You must have bumped your head if you think I would send you my laptop". I had ran external keyboard since the m and c keys quit one day. I bought a ducky one with blue switches, and honestly, I wouldnt go back.

Hello.

I know this thread is many years old, but maybe some people will just find it now (like it happened to me only a few weeks ago.)

I found a solution:

After much reading and checking on others attempts (and my own), this seems to be a hardware issue, although intermittent.

What I finally decided was to disassemble my GP62 7RD Leopard until I got to the Keyboard connector. I VERY CAREFULLY (the whole thing needs to be done with the utmost care) applied some contact cleaner and seated and reseated a couple of times. Then put it all back together and after turning it on again, the issue is gone.

To disassemble:

1. Take optical drive out.
2. Take cover out.
3. Take hard drive out.
4. After that, many guides tell you to disconnect everything, like ram and even remove heatsinks. NOT necessary.
Necessary: Disconnect power connector in the upper left corner. Unscrew fans but leave them alone. Disconnect daughterboard ribbon cable on the left. Disconnect wi-fi antennas, display cable and, of course, unscrew Mobo.

5. You can pivot the MOBO by pulling by the top (you can grab fans/copper lines).
6. Keyboard connectors are at the bottom.

most of the time the only way i have saved these keyboards is by taking it apart and putting the keyboard itself in a sonic cleaner.....and even then i have had a few come back with single keys that did not work after 3 or 4 bathes in the cleaner

and this will be locked in about 20 minutes....wow its old....

I did not know about sonic cleaners. Thank you.

Sonic cleaners are good for many things but the fluid can be a bit expensive - similar to rock tumblers which can be used to remove rust and polish things with the proper media.

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
