At least then you have an upgrade path.
yeah. I'm thinking at this point it's time to really just build new. Than mess with an old working machine.
The wait is on for ryzen 2 this spring / summer.
TBH no lower than i5 8400 or Ryzen 2600, quad core cpus are hitting their limits really.
It seems that you've been going to swap out that cpu for eons.
Maybe I should get the parts that are cheaper on the way, like case, etc.
https://pcpartpicker.com/products/cpu/#k=33,30&sort=price&page=1
but thats a lateral move from your am3 athlon (3.5 dual vs 3.0 quad) $50
https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/AMD-Athlon-II-X4-640-vs-AMD-A6-9500-APU-2016-DBR/m225vsm302063
next up are the pentium g $50
https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/AMD-Athlon-II-X4-640-vs-Intel-Celeron-G4900/m225vsm482751
much faster single core, but only 2 of them
keeping to a quad, a8 9600 $65
https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/AMD-Athlon-II-X4-640-vs-AMD-A8-9600-APU-2016-DBR/m225vsm339630
about 10-20% faster than the am3 athlon
r3 ryzen 2200g $90
https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/AMD-Athlon-II-X4-640-vs-AMD-Ryzen-3-2200G/m225vsm441832
about twice as fast as the am3 athlon
similar to the new i3 quad
i3 8100 $120
https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/AMD-Athlon-II-X4-640-vs-Intel-Core-i3-8100/m225vs3942
all will need ddr4 ram, 16g is about $100
on a new build for gaming, i would not go below the r5 2600 or i5 8600
Seems the 2200g would be the best idea/starting point ?
its $70 more and will avoid tossing the $90 cpu if you upgrade
as stated above, quads are starting to limit newer games
2c/2t Celeron for 60$?
Why the hell not 200GE in MSI board and OC to 4GHz?

Depending on how far you are it may be worth the drive - you can get a 2400g / b450 combo for the same price as typical 2200g / mobo (~$170), well worth the upgrade to 4c/8t will last you much longer then the 4c system.
Also agree the 2600 / b450 combos are well worth the extra $30 for 6c/12t at the $200 mark.
B450 or X470 Motherboard
DDR4 RAM (2666 or better)
AM4 CPU (such as Ryzen 2200G or better)
I'd also suggest a decent 2017 or newer model gold certified PSU with at least 1x 8pin EPS/CPU and 2x 8pin PCIE/GPU
OS drive it also greatly helps to install OS onto an SSD. A HDD could be used as secondary storage.
Windows 10 64bit, which is free to use
