Cheapest way to get off Athlon II X4 640 before 2020?

So, with 7 dying, what's the cheapest way, but yet still not tossing money down toilet, to upgrade from AM3?

I doubt the Athlon 200GE is going to be anything ?

yeah. I'm thinking at this point it's time to really just build new. Than mess with an old working machine.

Win 7 dying has nothing to do with the x4 640 I've got that running on win 10 fine.

The wait is on for ryzen 2 this spring / summer.

TBH no lower than i5 8400 or Ryzen 2600, quad core cpus are hitting their limits really.

the r5 2600 adds 2 more cores and higher stock clocks
its $70 more and will avoid tossing the $90 cpu if you upgrade

as stated above, quads are starting to limit newer games

You could get an APU like A8 or A10 since they're very nice! I have an A8 7650k with integrated Radeon R7 and It rocks! I can play GTA 5 and CS GO at good frames per second. These are very cheap tho. It can go up to 3.8 Ghz. Check it out:

Are you nearby the Micro Center stores in either Dallas or Houston?

Depending on how far you are it may be worth the drive - you can get a 2400g / b450 combo for the same price as typical 2200g / mobo (~$170), well worth the upgrade to 4c/8t will last you much longer then the 4c system.

Also agree the 2600 / b450 combos are well worth the extra $30 for 6c/12t at the $200 mark.

Well in short, u need a whole new pc.

B450 or X470 Motherboard
DDR4 RAM (2666 or better)
AM4 CPU (such as Ryzen 2200G or better)

I'd also suggest a decent 2017 or newer model gold certified PSU with at least 1x 8pin EPS/CPU and 2x 8pin PCIE/GPU

OS drive it also greatly helps to install OS onto an SSD. A HDD could be used as secondary storage.

Windows 10 64bit, which is free to use
