Is the Radeon RX Vega 64 overkill for a Ryzen 5 2600?
Hello,
I've got a question regarding the capabilities of the Ryzen 5 2600 with the Radeon RX Vega 64.

The Radeon's Vega 64 is a decent rival for the Nvidia's 1080.
Both of the GPUs have, according to benchmarks, very similar effectiveness.
The Vega, however, has recently dropped in price to an attractive number, 100$ cheaper than the 1080, and that's what is getting my attention.

But I just don't know if a 160$ CPU will handle a 400$ GPU, and maybe I should just go with a more realistic expectation and go with the 1060/580.

Ok enough story:

- Is the Ryzen 2600 capable of handling the demands of the Vega 64?
- What about overclocking? Will that make any significant difference?
- Talking about OC, what'd be a good 2600 OC cooler? Is the Corsair H60 too much?

Anyways, please tell me what you think.
I do want to go with the Vega, but if it's going to be a waste of money due to CPU limitations, better just be realistic.

If it helps, it's a 2560 x 1440 60Hz monitor.

Thanks for your time!

The Vega 64 will go just fine with a 2600(x).

1. The 2600 should be capable of handing a Vega 64, it would take a game that beats the living ♥♥♥♥ out of your CPU for it to be a bottleneck on that card.

2. Overclocking can potentially work, but not always if it's just too weak for what you're demanding of it. In most cases though, like 99.9% of the time, you won't need to overclock.

3. For air cooling, you'd want something like an NH-D15 that's really beefy (as the more heatsink surface area to store heat and the better the fans to dissipate that heat, the better), or an AIO with a high quality pump like an H100i PRO. Pumps are the deciding factor in AIO performance, as the entire unit is basically garbage if the pump isn't a good performer.

It will be fine with Vega 64.
Ryzens are not exactly good overclockers so some monstrous heatsink would be just waste of money. Noctua NH-U12S SE-AM4 will be plenty for it.

Thing to note - all those $400 Vega 64`s seem to be blower type reference cards, they are loud and cooling is not exactly great. If you want to do 1440p cheap then $350 RTX 2060 would be better choice, performance very close to GTX 1070 Ti and runs 1440p fine.

I have a refference Vega 64 and I can't complain about the noise and cooling performance. It's leagues ahead of the Nvidia "Founders" cards.

There are alot of custom vega 64 cards for £400 available, but, to be honest, after using a blower vega 64 for a good while in my htpc, it really wasn't that loud and it kept the temps in a perfetly acceptable range.

If you maxed the fan out, yeah it got pretty loud, but so do most cards, plus that means it's at around 5000rpm, which is kind of crazy, but does drop the temps quite alot, stock is around 2000rpm under load.

Edit.
It amazes me how many people seem to 'know' what the vega cards are like when so few own them and how said reports never seem to match up with the experience of those who do own them.

Also the stock cooler is fine for ocing a 2600.

Ryzen 2600 is strong enough CPU for any gaming GPU out there. You will want a decent quality PSU of around 600W though also

No such thing as "GPU overkill". Definitely go for it.

Alright, thanks to everyone for their help and opinions, I'll be sure to make a little more research on the suggestions you provided.

I was expecting more 'no it wont work' responses, but I was so wrong.
Well, I'll see if I can readjust the budget and get the Vega 64 then.

Again, thanks to all of you for your help!

Technically speaking - any GPU will work with any CPU as long as they can fit the same mobo and mobo itself ain't a weird one.
Performance speaking - if your CPU is pushing enough frames for a comfortable gameplay, but u still want to see more GPU usage for some reason, u can always crank up the graphics, use heavy antialiasing, or even AMD Virtual Super Resolution. And the next years more graphically demanding games will come out and u'll be happy to know u didn't cheap out on GPU.

I'm with snow on this one very few computer component's will be Overkill always buy the best for your money. The 1060 and RX580 though great budget cards will be outdated sooner than later. Especially the 1060 with 6gb of Vram. I've been reading rumors that the next gen consoles will be sporting 16gb of DDR6 which I'm sure 8gb will be going to the GPU if not more. I have many games using more than 6gb of Vram right now when you really crank up the graphics.

I know this is older but being the owner of a 2600 and a saphire nitro+ vega 64 I can say for sure that you WILL NEED more than a 600 watt PSU. More 850, I promise you that if you go with a 600 it will crash and burn.As far as bottlenecking, it won't happen. My GPU will hit 99% while my CPU is at 50%-70% in demanding games.

600w is plenty.

A Vega + 2600x will not pull much more then 400w at most.

Yea sure, if u have a very crappy 600w maybe.

Buy a quality gold certified 650w

You've hooked your pc upto a power meter to confirm this, right? As, that's what the rest of us did... And 600w is easily enough, I could run my 7900x and sli 1080ti's off of an 850w (if I dropped the oc a bit) lol

Overclocking can draw a whole lotta power.

I would go with the 850 watt.
