2. No, even if there were no support, nothing would happen as it would be used only if monitor and videocard support it.
Bear in mind that it is only supported on 10 and 20 series nvidia gpu's
It's working great with my 1070ti
Other Freesync monitors can work but there may be issues along flicking and such. To enable it on these you need to manually use Nvidia control panel to turn it on.
You'll need the latest driver to try it currently 417.71
You will likely have to enable Freesync on the monitor itself as well.
If you can connect via DP do that. As sawdust pointed out you may need to enable Freesync on the monitor itself too. Not all need it turning on in the monitor settings so you'd have to check.
Most important part is that you need to also connect via DisplayPort not HDMI.
