Intel Rapid Storage and SSDs
Is it needed? Should it be installed? I always have done, but I cannot find any definitive info about whether it benefits an ssd like it would a hard drive

It’s to use your SSD as a cache for a HDD.

If you don’t have a HDD then do not install it.
If I'm remembering correctly some revisions of the IRST driver would give a performance increase even when using a single primary ssd or so it would say that.
Most cases I've seen you don't actually need it for the function of the system but I don't think it would hurt to have the driver installed as you can take take it off from autostart/tray icon easily enough anyway without impacting perforrmance.

It could be system, configuration specific as to why it's hard to find a conclusive answer. If your system manufacturer recommends it then worth it to have it there as part of your driver set IMO

i am planning to use SSD with RST to upgrade my old hard drive on my computer its an 1tb mechanichal drive i am planning to put an SSD to boost it will it work ? by the way i use an old machine with a intel chipset Q67 and RST 10.1.0.1008 this is the latest versions that supports my chipset idk if it has intel rapid response techology in it... but will this work? is there other alternatives to boost my computer's hard drive with a sata SSD ?
rst is completely useless now

it was made for when ssds were tiny and expensive, ~32-64g, and used to cache commonly used data on the hdd

now you can just buy a ssd large enough for the os and a few games
128g+ are dirt cheap and more than enough for windows with updates and a few games

RST is used to cache the most commonly used files on a hdd to an ssd to increase speed of access as stated by _I_ above. I would think that these would mostly be files from the os drive as its the most commonly accessed, as the os drive is already an ssd i do not think you would see any benefit, rather you would see the opposite in the loss of space to a cache that is not needed.
If you are serious about a caching option, then look into primocache.

I have been using it for a few years.
