Dell 5577 with HDMI 1.4 output
So i have a dell 5577 with HDMI 1.4 output and i wanted to use an external monitor and maybe anyone here has the same laptop and uses an external monitor? i don't want to just buy a monitor without making sure that my laptop can support the video output if that make sense.

An HDMI 1.4 output is compatible with HDMI 2.0 displays you just run at 1.4 bandwidth, this will not matter unless you want to run 4k@60hz but no issue with 1080p.

As long as the monitor also has HDMI, it will work. The version doesn't make difference, unless going for 4K.

Even if it doesn't have HDMI, but instead has DisplayPort or DVI, it will still work if you just get a cable which has HDMI on one end and the other plug on the other end.

The thing is that i'm using it mainly for gaming like dota 2 and cs go so I'm a bit anxious that i might get a drop on my fps or that my gpu(gtx 1050) wont give me its full potential or capacity(for the lack of better term) than it should.

What resolution does your laptop have? If the monitor uses the same, the performance will be the same. Display size has no relation to performance. It's the resolution that matters.

It has fhd 1920x1080 but it terms of output my laptop has HDMI 1.4 does it mean that a 2.0 hdmi monitor wont work?

As I stated in my post: the version of HDMI doesn't make difference unless going for high resolution like 4K.
HDMI 2.0 simply just can run higher resolution than 1.4.

No, it will work. Those are backwards compatible. As long as you don't go higher than FullHD 1920x1080 you will have no problems. Neither with game performance or the connection.

In theory you can run 1080p at 120Hz, but the videocard will struggle to really deliver such a framerates in most games, so 60Hz would be your best bet.

Ok i get it now, and in terms of input lag should i be worried about the refresh rate aka Hz or response time? sorry guys if I'm kinda of diving deep right now.

im glad you mentioned that cuz i was eyeing on a 144hz monitor, so in that case i will be getting input lag or flicker or anything like that?

that's exactly what im worried about. i thought the more hz the better. therefore a 60hz with 1 or 2 ms will work just fine then. thank you so much for your help appreciate it.

Well, more is better, but only if your computer can support that. The 1050 is not a bad videocard, but it's not exactly powerful.
Perfectly fine for 1080p60 gaming, but even then requires turning down some settings in newer games to get a stable refresh rate.
120Hz would require require a lot more processing power to get a stable 120fps.

yes you are right and i'm aware of that a triple A games on high settings for a 1050 wont give me a good fps but mainly i played dota 2 so do you think a 120hz on a high settings wont be a problem or should i just settled for 60hz?
