Help with thermal paste
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Cooler-Master-MasterGel-Performance-MGZ-NDSG-N15M-R1/dp/B01JME9ASC/ref=sr_1_2?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1532633227&sr=1-2&keywords=mastergel%2Bpro&th=1

I bought one just like this
And my friend now is all like "no this only works for desktops"

I have a laptop and I have used a thermal paste on it for a while but i used it up so i got this

Is there such thing as "Desktop thermal" or are they the same ?

I got 8C lower with kryonaut vs mx4 on load which for me is a big deal because that means going from over 70C on a gpu to the mid 60. The same test on my on cpu was about 6C difference but that isn't overclocked heavily.

Thats great you would've known if the paste created a short somewhere by now so probably good enough paste there.

If you had 8C difference then the MX 4 was not applied correctly.

https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/thermal-paste-comparison,5108.html

Was applied in the same way for cpu and gpu, I did the tests. It's just a better paste overall and made for overclocks etc
The mx4 is a really good paste just not as good, the difference is definately not 1 -2 it's more than that. Seen it with my own eyes.
the noctua and gelid is closer to the kryonaut than the mx4 is.

Sorry but no..

Especially take a look at the second one and the testing and benchmarks..

Its a good paste . But the most important thing is how you apply it. Not the paste you use ( as long is its one of the good pastes ).

I myself listened to the hype and reapplied Grizzly Kryonaut just 1 week after getting my new system assembled . I had used MX 4. I got an improvement of 1C at idle and 2C with the stress test on my I7 8700K. You might as well use it for the extra $10 cost. But if you already have a good paste applied . Its not really worth it.

For Intel's cpus, the TIM between cpu die and IHS is working as limiting factor. So there won't be much difference between most decent thermal pastes without delidding and using liquid metal. If you were to do that and then do the same tests, you would see much higher difference since the heat actually can transfer from cpu to IHS properly.

And you get even further difference if you don't have IHS at all and instead the cooler has direct contact to the die. Like on gpus.

oh damn, did you just add a pea sized amount or did you spread it? also hopefully you didnt put too little or too less. On my laptop i went with the spred method but it has to be a very thin application

I like how literally every single time I post asking about a PC related issue somehow you people turn it into an argument among yourselves to something not very related to the post, I guess thats just how pc gamers are

at first I did the pea thing and put the stuff back in
Then I did the spread but it wasn't very thin I made it a bit thicker ..is that bad ? I mean more is good by this logic right ? xd

I saw improvement now at least
it didn't hit 94c it stayed at 93c at max but I am guessing sooner or later it will go to 94c

Hm ...now that I saw 2 online videos applying the same "Thermal compound" That I bought
Theirs seems a bit too liquidy and mine is very solid almost like the play dough ..like no really I can pick it up and it doesn't get mixed in my hand its almost solid ....I wonder if its a knockoff

Edit : I saw 5 more videos using the same exact one
"Coolermaster Mastergel Pro Thermal Compound" And even the package is the same and the specs behind are the same but theirs was like I said, looks liquid and mine is unbelievably solid

Update

Yeah apparently mine is either a chinese 100% knockoff or just been there for so long that it expired

Or it simply was exposed to a lot of heat while in transporting and dried up.

Yeah it could be it's not aging well :( and isn't designed to last that long. Arctic mx4 lasts years in storage so just go for one of these if you still can. Also make sure to use isopropyl alcohol to clean off the old stuff and do it spread like you said but as thin as you can where you don't see the surface of your cpugpu chip cause when you apply it too thick it can act as an insulator which can be bad. Use a straight side of a plastic card to help if needed and when assembling back the heatsink go a little at a time on all screws simultaneusly so the it doesn't spread to one side if you know what I mean, just do little turns at a time on each and get the screws down within turning distances of one another. Takes a little patience but most guides forget to even mention it.

yeah I don't know why that guy is even bothering to argue with me not gonna bother. Anyways gl with it, I did the same thing with my laptop and it doesn't reach 70C anymore where before it was throttling heavily.
