i7-7700 vs EVGA rtx 2070 super?
Hey, I may have a problem. I'm pretty new to dabbling with PC hardware on my own and when choosing a new GPU I think I messed up. Probably should've come here first.
I wanted a more powerful graphics card (currently have an rtx 1070) ,so I bought an evga rtx 2070 super 8gb gddr6. Only after ordering my card and new PSU did I start to consider my CPU! It's only an i7-7700 (3.6ghz with boost to 4.2) and my motherboard will only support up to an i7-7700k, so there isn't a lot of upgrade room there. Are these gonna pair well? 😬
And if not, which I suspect, what would you recommend? Or is the room for GPU improvement too limited by the i7-7700, and not worth the performance upgrade for the cash?

The reason i asked is that in 1080p you could have been more limited by CPU than GPU even with gtx1070 in some games.
Look at GPU load, and if you have less than target FPS with less than 100% GPU load then it is probably CPU.
Since you already bought it... it will not be worse than 1070 in any case. It will be better in some, will not matter in other. Might be a good reason to upgrade CPU too, especially since whole CPU+motherboard upgrade is likely to be cheaper than those 2070s...

There is no upgrade path for your motgerboard.

Any cpu upgrade aside from 7700K and overclocking that perhaps, would require new mobo and most likely better ram too.

Overall your cpu is fine for whatever gpus are out right now.

Have 16gb minimum ram, at least one ssd and Win10 64bit 1909?

Then u should be good.

Yeah, I've git all that--32gb ram (for no purpose whatsoever 😂) Like I said, I'm new and when I got it I didn't realize how useless the extra 16 was haha. I have a 1tb m.2 ssd for my boot drive and frequent games, as well as abundant hdd. I will get a new motherboard and cpu eventually, but I will be upgrading the case for a better ventilated one at that time too, and I've never built one before so I'm a little hesitant because the components are pretty expensive if you mess up. I've been watching tons of builds on youtube so hopefully I'll be more confident when it's time to transfer over. I've been pretty forward thinking in everything I bought for this one so I can hopefully move plenty over tonthe new case.

Update: the new card is in place and running. Turns out I was freaking out over nothing! This runs great! I am super happy with it. I am using dsr to run 1440 on my 1080 monitor and I am running higher fps than i was on my lower settings, and with no drops! Hunter cotw with all my reshade applied usually ran around 45fps, now it's over 70 and doesn't budge. The witcher 3 plays like butter no matter what's going on. And bonus: really freaking quiet--i can't even hear it. If you're on the fence I hope this helps. I'll post updates if i experience any issues with other games as I try them out. Thanks all!

Told ya! Have fun with new card, mate.
Oh, by the way, which exact model it is? A guy in another thread thinks about buying 2080S, and the model you chosen is, as you said, really freaking quiet, so I'll recommend him the same thing.

The exact model, as copied from my order: "EVGA - SUPER XC ULTRA GAMING NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 Super 8GB GDDR6 PCI Express 3.0 Graphics Card - Black/Transparent
Model:
08G-P4-3173-KB
SKU:
6373489"
It's a 2070s, so I can't guarantee the 2080 would be too, but I'm playing right now and cant hear it running.

Well, yeah, 2080S is expected to be just a bit hotter and a bit louder than 2070S, but miles better than some MSI or ASUS crap anyway, and more reliable as well.

I'll try it and see. Should be in by Wednesday but I may not have time to play with it until next week; I will for sure post an update on performance though.
My last PC was an i7 4770 non K with 16gb of ddr3 and a GTX 1080sc. If that setup was fine, yours will be fine as well.
