Is i5-6600 still good enough today?
It's like 4 years old now, right? Should i consider upgrading it?

Its kinda weak, i already had problems with 6600 two years ago in BF1, cpu pinned at 100% caused framedrops and stuttering..the era of 4 cores is enough is gone..you should upgrade to ryzen 3600/3700x. It was even worse after meltdown bios update.

I would aim for a Ryzen 5 1600 minimum.

Thats not really a smart choice, he could just upgrade to i7 7700 and have a better gaming cpu.
He should get ryzen 3000 series which can finally compete with intel in gaming. R5 3600 with a b450 board is a very good deal.

...and OP will have less FPS in most games.

If it doesn't play games the way you want at the settings you want then sure but there's more to it than just the cpu like GPU, SSD and ram. I'd avoid moving from your i5 4 core to another i7 7700 4 core 8 thread when you have the option to move over to a Ryzen 3600 and B450 mobo while reusing your current DDR4 and other hardware.

What are the rest of your specs?

IMO If you are running into some issues like <100% GPU load + FPS drops you should consider upgrading. At this point such issues migh happen only in few games, most of them will still be fine, so if you are not running into them might as well leave it as is for now.

BF1 eating 100% of the cpu is actually one of my main reasons haha

You would need a new B450 Motherboard cheapest is around $70ish, and new 2x8GB 3200 CL16 RAM which is also around $70. BF1 IIRC does use 6 cores.

BFV at 4:37 ^.

Ps, you'd just need a 3600+B450+ optional cm212 or alike.

No, your data would still stay on your drives. Be aware that not all B450 boards have an updated BIOS out of the box but MSI models designated with "Max" do. If the board doesn't, then you'll need a compatible Ryzen CPU to update it.

Copy paste your games common folder to another physical drive if they're not already on a different drive( steamapps/common).

locked i5 to first-2nd gen ryzen is a lateral move
https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i5-6600-vs-AMD-Ryzen-5-1600/3514vs3919
ryzen has more threada, but the core performance is the same

if it doeenst play the games you have as well as you like, its time to upgrade
for most games at 60+fps range its enough when not gpu limited
