Tiny HDMI question
I built a new rig with the Asus gtx 1660 super dual evo which supports HDMI 2.0b.
My monitor however supports HDMI, not even 2.0.
If I buy a 2.0 cable and connect it to my monitor, will it work? Is it fully backwards compatible?

Why use DVI to HDMI when both the GPU and monitor have HDMI?

I'd like to know that too.

I will add to my question. If the cable only specifies 2.0 and Asus said 2.0b, will a 2.0 cable work for the gpu?

HDMI is backwards compatible. Old cables with with new ports and new cables with old ports.

It will run at the lowest spec in the chain. If your cable is 2.0, the GPU is 2.0b and the monitor is 1.4b it will all run at 1.4b.

Yeah I realized it would take the lowest spec because I read about the backwards compatibility, but I was wondering if the "b" was crucial. If I had a 2.0 cable and a 2.0b gpu would it work.

But I'm pretty sure you answered it.

2.0a and 2.0b just have support for HDR and are identical spec-wise to 2.0.

A 2.0 cable can run 2.0a and 2.0b like normal.

Ok, now I get it. Thank you for your patience.
Always good to learn new things.

Just buy hdmi cables that supports the newer 2.1 specs then you're covered for anything.

Not sure why someone suggested dvi to hdmi. That's dumb and no one really needs dvi anymore unless using a display that only has dvi and vga. Dvi to hdmi would mean no audio option from gpu through hdmi.

I thought about a 2.1 but couldn't find any for some reason. It's not as common in my country just yet.
