Why no AMD?
Considering you can actually get better for your money with your budget.

Gigabyte Z390 UD is the best z390 motherboard among Low price point ($130).
it has 10+2 phase VRM. That can handle even an i9 9900k decently.

OP is on a 1K budget. So the i9 9900K is a bad choice.

That is bad advice. Gigabyte Z390 UD will have VRM get hotter when i9 is overclocked. It is hotter than my Gigabyte Z390 Aorus Master. Though it doesn't fail in margin level, still that is bad advice.

I have Gigabyte Z390 Aorus Master and i9-9900K that keep the really low temperature of VRM.

phase count alone doesn't determine if a VRM is good

Right. It is about proper design. There is 12 phase that's really hot and there is 12 phase that's really cold.

and phases can be doubled, (2 sets of mosfets per phase with chokes)
the 12 phase could be a 4+1+1 doubled

and msi has been putting mosfets on the underside of the mobo with no direct cooling on them

mosfet | mobo pcb | mosfet | cooler
cooks the mobo pcb, heat from the bottom mosfet needs to travel through the mobo and the other mosfet to be cooled

Also, two MOSFET and two chokes aren't always two phases since they are switching at the same time and no doubler, so it would be one phase. It is called the twin phase or teamed power phase. That's what some ASUS and MSI have it. The most common is the 4-phase or 6-phase PWM controller. 8-phase PWM controller is rare.

it's written on the gigabyte web site that Z390 UD has 10+2 phase VRM.
i know it's not the best z390 mobo. The best one may be the ''MSI Z390 Godlike'' or Asrock Taichi etc. And i would not put a i9 9900k in a $130 board.

My point was, it's the best cheap Z390 board among other cheap motherboard options of similar price point. Definitely best choice for i5 9600k, or maybe upto 9700k overclocked, if you are on budget.

Also it got ''hardware unboxed'' best budget mobo recommendations-

''Hardware Unboxed'' also said that it can handle i9 9900k fine.

Do you mean it is uncertain whether or not Gigabyte Z390 UD can handle i9-9900? Because they have something against this mobo in Hardware Unboxed in beware budget Z390 while use i9.

The better motherboard Z390 board with cold VRM is actual Gigabyte Z390 Aorus Master and Asrock Z390 Taichi Ultimate. Probably Gigabyte Z390 Aorus Xtreme, but it is hard to find and very expensive.

i never recommended Gigabyte Z390 UD for i9 9900k.
you should understand that if you read my main comment (comment #16).

it was just an example to say that it can even handle upto i9 9900k decently.
so it can easily handle OP's i5. And it costs only $130.
other mobo in that price range has way less power delivery.
_I_ 2020 年 3 月 3 日 下午 1:18
9900k build is outside the op budget anyway
for games its no better than the 9700k

9600k fits in the budget easily, good enough for 144hz in most games

see the HARDWARE UNBOXED video i have posted in comment #24.
just watch the starting 1 minute,
It said Gigabyte z390 UD can run i9 9900k full unleashed.

This is clearly you recommend those two. If this is not correct, please help us to understand what you are trying to say.

This is not true and this is not the correct video. It will be hotter while overclocked to 5 GHz. It is 100C as shown in beware budget Z390 in Hardware Unboxed video.
