clonezilla support
Im trying to move my os from a 1 tb hard drive to a 500 gb ssd. i thought i would be able to move it even with its larger storage space if the 1 tb hhd had less than 500 gb of allocated space so i tried that and it still attempts to move the whole disk, even the unallocated part regardless so i was wondering if i could either someone decrease the online size of the hard drive or make the clonezilla software only move the less than 500 gb partition.

no clonezilla is mirroring the disc. it is unable to recognize which files are important. It can only do an exact 1:1 copy.

It can resize the partitions.

As long as the bootloader is a 1:1 copy it's fine. I used to clone 1tb HDDs over to 120/250/500gb SSDs all the time.

It doesn't move any files, it only decreases the empty space between them.

It copies all of them.

I dunno what magic tricks this software does, I just know it works.

You have to resize the partitions.

If the target disk size is larger than the size of source disk of image, you can try to use option "-k1" which will create the partition table proportionally in the target disk and turn on option "-r" to resize the file file system in the partition automatically. This is useful to make use all of the target disk size.

If the destination disk is smaller than the source disk, if using beginner mode, you will see an error message like this (attempting to restore an image saved from 17.1 GB to a smaller disk (8.5 GB):

If you are sure all the data from the image could fit the smaller disk, i.e. it won't be written to the wrong disk space, you can check the option "-icds".Warning! To select this option, you have to know what you are doing!.
