Monster Hunter: World - Why does my PC freeze when I try to play it?
I've recently bought MH:W, but when I try to play the game, the screen goes black and everything freezes. Help, please? If it's useful, my processor specifications are: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-5200U CPU @ 2.20GHz 2.20GHz

Most likely because you have weak laptop below minimum specs of the game.

Your notebook is too weak.
You can refund the game or get an appropriate PC.

Could you please tell me the minimum specs needed in a laptop to play it?

Actually no. I just read the system requirements, and what's necessary is a kind of graphics card. My system (Intel Core i5-5200U) is good enough to support it (minimum is i5-4460),

Recommended is a Ryzen 5 1500X or a i7-3770 CPU on the desktop side.
This means a 4C/8T equivalent CPU for your notebook. Since I'm not into notebooks, I can't really recommend you a configuration. IMO the best place to game is in front of a Desktop PC.

Just look at newer Core i7 / Core i9 or Ryzen 5/ 7 notebooks with dedicated graphics card.
The Ryzen 5 4600H and Ryzen 4 7 4800H notebooks will be available soon and they look very competitive.

A higher number doesn’t mean it’s better.

You need a dedicated gpu.

Share full specs via a CPUZ validation

Why bother when his laptop CPU is way below what is needed for minimum system requirements?

You cant compare that as games always show desktop specs.

5200U is a very low power cpu for office use and multimedia. No where near as strong/fast as a desktop 4460

And without a decent dedicated amd or nvidia gpu, games simply won't work for the most part as most games that use Directx, opengl, vulkan require something better then simple intel hd graphics gpu

All of your comments have been very helpful. I'm grateful for all of your input. Sorry if I come off a bit of a (read: a huge) noob and ignoramus about these things.

In any case, I've read up on the subject a little more. I DO have a GPU, NVIDIA GEFORCE. My RAM is also good enough. So, apart from upgrading the gpu, what I need to do is find out whether my laptop can handle 3.20 GHz and if it can, install a compatible processor (as long as the current one isn't permanently bolted to the laptop).

You can't upgrade laptop components like you can a desktop PC. Best you can do is the RAM and Disk drives. GPU and CPU will be soldered/built into the laptops motherboard.

Only option is a better laptop/desktop. unless you have the money for that soon you'd be better off refunding the game now and repurchasing in the future after you have bought adequate hardware to run the game.
