Brand new MSI laptop, paint coming off of the keyboard & case

Is this normal for an MSI laptop? I got it back in September, been using it pretty much every day since. I needed a laptop for my last year in HS and college and this was on sale with good specs so I picked it up.

My last MSI product was a GTX 970, it still works even after spending its whole 5 years being overclocked since day 1. Zero performance lost from then to now. Its been used in 4 pcs in the house, and has outlived them all. With that said, I trusted MSI and figured they'd still be just as good - I guess I was wrong.

Its not even a year old yet, and paint is already wearing off. I don't know if this is normal with MSI laptops or not, but I am not impressed when a $1500 laptop can not deal with daily usage - and I am talking about browsing the internet, school work, video editing & photoshop along with gaming.

Somethings seriously wrong if paint on an expensive laptop isn't resilient enough to to survive a daily trip in a laptop bag.

If there's a way to slow this down, please let me know because I want to keep the paint intact for at least a year.

I already probably have to have the keyboard replaced because of the paint coming off of it, when this could've been easily avoided if MSI's quality control was the same as it was in 2014, when the 970 came out.

Out of all the cards they released, my favorite one would be the 970. It was cheap, it wasn't locked down, and it was a damn good overclocker. It survived 5+ years of being used in situations that would fry cards. Spending 80% of its life overclocked, overvolted to 1312mV and having its TDP raised to 287watts. And it still never died.

That card is what got me into computers and hardware, it taught me about vbios modding and overclocking. After Nvidia stopped allowing people from modding their cards and then started to gimp their drivers, that was it for them. ♥♥♥♥ them. Went out and bought an RX5700XT on sale.

I bought it brand new last August at Canada computers. Isn't even a year old yet.

MSI Gl63 8SD, it came with the I7-8750h, 1660ti, 60hz 1080p display. It came with a single stick of Samsung 8Gb DDR4 2400mhz.

I replaced the ram and installed a Corsair Vengeance 8x2 2666mhz kit.

And yes, I did find out people had issues with lower end MSI laptops a few years ago. I got this knowing this may be a problem, I was hoping they would have fixed it by now. And seeing as they haven't, not many people had this issue enough to force MSI to fix it I guess.

Its something I guess I have to deal with until my PC is more 'stable' as of right now, GTA for example would completely crash my PC. It would be either a blackscreen, or the BSOD. Sometimes it even happened 7times in a row.

So now I'm using my laptop as a desktop replacement. Which probably doesn't help my problem with the paint at all.

Try to RMA? Put old RAM back in and send it back, have them repair or send a new unit, and then put the RAM in the repaired/new unit

I'm not going to RMA my laptop, wait a few weeks to have it returned to me just to have the same issue come back within a few months. Other than the paint coming off prematurely, I haven't had any issue with the laptop itself, hardware wise.

What I want to know, how common is this issue for MSI in general? Does it happen on the other brands within the same price range I paid ($1,500CAD or $1,147USD), or is MSI the only one that still has this issue?

It'll happen to anything where there's lots of friction (say, like hands and wrists when typing/gaming.)
Sure, it shouldn't have happened this soon, unless you're constantly moving your hands around on it.
But, so long as it's just the paint, I honestly wouldn't worry.

OR, you could just RMA it.

Or maybe its a factory fault and your new one wont have it, i would rma it and see what the new one does

Mainly I wouldn't worry if the paint came off. However, if you have a habit of putting your laptop in your bag, it's probably flaking due to that friction when you move around.

This doesn't explain the keyboard. It's obviously they did these in very cheap manner of finish.

I had many Lenovo Y-series, Asus ROG and Alienware laptops. Never, even many many years of everyday use did the keyboard have issues like these MSI are having. That's ridiculous given the pricing.

True. My last laptop from MSI was from years ago and the built quality was indeed superb apart from the physical damage sustained on my end. Though that model mostly just had the glossy plastic exterior one'd expect from these high-end models in general.

To put 'paint' on the laptop exterior sounds like a pretty silly decision in the first place as it's where most of the wear and tear will take place.

Contact MSI support THEN decide what to do.

As far as the keys go
What you could do is use some clear nail polish and lightly clear coat the keys so the paint wont wear through use or temps as easily.
