HDD 5400 rpm vs. 7200 rpm big speed difference?
I need more storage soon and i'm looking into the 2-6 TB range (most likely 4 TB). I notice there is a big difference in price for HDD between 5400 rpm vs. 7200 RPM.

Money is a concern for me, but if it isn't I would get a WD black 4TB 7200 rpm.

How much slower is 5400 rpm drive? idk what i will be using it for exactly as both my primary and backup HDD is running low.

As long as you use hdd to store data and not run things from it rpm does not matter that much. 5400 even has some advantages like less noise and often less heat.
Seek time will be higher, linear speeds will be lower for given storage density but... does it really matter nowadays when all fast storage needs are covered by ssd-s anyway?
for movies, media not much difference

but for games load times will be reduced with the 7200rpm

for os its a massive difference between 5x00, 7200 and ssd

TBH your Primary drive should be an ssd 240GB ssds are cheap now, your 2nd game drive should be 7200rpm 3TB Seagate and Toshiba are both fast and cheap per TB, storage music/photos/vids 5400-5900rpm are fine.

Ps, the WD 4TB Black isn't all that great it's the 6TB black that's the WD beast.

For that you would want 7200. And always, install the OS on an SSD.

Well, for this tasks the difference will, most likely, be noticable.
It is hard to say anything specific as things vary a lot between specific hdd-s.

i avoided/avoiding SSD because storage price is still worse than HDD and I worry the long term reliability after many writes since it is flash memory. I mentioned the WD black 4 TB because i currently use the WD black 1 TB; it's been good to me.

Trust me. Once you put your OS on an SSD, you'll never go back to a HDD for the OS. Get at least a small 240/256GB SSD, I guarrantee you 100% you'll have zero regrets.

i doubt you have a 148GB hdd.

not sure the exact size, but windows says 148GB so....
for video editnig the 5400 or 7200rpm drive will slow it down if its reading and writing to the same drive

not that i read back then (like +5 years ago). The more you write the SSD, the more it loses it life. Tho idk how big of a issue it is for today's ssd.

Well, 1-2Tb ssd are not stupidly expensive anymore.
As for reliability concerns... hdd-s are not unlimited either. They just do not mention limits for consumer drives. If you look at enterprise hdd-s they have rated limits for number of i/o operations too, mostly because of mechanical wear.
For home use ssd rewrite limits are mostly irrelevant making them often more reliable than hdd-s. And if you are worried about data you should have backups anyway.
