HDD 5400 rpm vs. 7200 rpm big speed difference?
I need more storage soon and i'm looking into the 2-6 TB range (most likely 4 TB). I notice there is a big difference in price for HDD between 5400 rpm vs. 7200 RPM.

Money is a concern for me, but if it isn't I would get a WD black 4TB 7200 rpm.

How much slower is 5400 rpm drive? idk what i will be using it for exactly as both my primary and backup HDD is running low.

Trust me, you'll thank yourself for installing Windows on an SSD. And no, SSds can write tens and tens of TERAbytes without issue.

Also, your OS on a HDD basically bottlenecks the whole system, all modern PCs should have at least a small SSD for the OS.

I'd only use 5400/5900 rpm for general file storage like WD Red or Purple.

For games/apps you want a decent 7200rpm model.

Put os and apps on ssd.
If can't afford more ssds, get a good 7200rpm sata3 hdd, like WD black or gold. Or Seagate IronWolf to put games onto.

Velociraptor HDDs are the best buy in term of performance/price ratio, you can find used dirty cheap.
If noise is an issue you can use a couple of earplugs (when using them at high voltage).
They can be overclocked at very high RPM to improve performances.

Aren't SSD's cheaper than that?. What am I missing?. I didn't even know they still made those.

WD gold is much faster then WD black, makes less noise, more reliable has other advantages as warranty and premium customer support while often even cost less.

unlike SSD which don't have mechanical parts HDD have mechanical components so can be overclocked just by running at higher voltage/RPM.
There are people with 22K RPM HDDs.

The only issue is the warranty.

I suggest drives that have 5 year minimum warranty. Those are usually all the good ones in terms of mechanical hdd
