File transfer per ethernet cable extremely slow
Hi, I'm trying to back up all my files to another PC before upgrading the OS on this one. That's photos, videos, files from 2015-2019, about 250GB.
I've set up sharing between my two PCs using an ethernet cable, and I can access and grab files from my main, using my Backup PC.

Taking a file from my main PC starts a copy process at about 2MB/s. That feels extremely slow. 250GB at that speed is... somewhere like 35h I think. Anything overnight would be fine, but that's excessive.

Is 2MB some kind of hardcap? Any ideas why this might be so slow? I feel like I'd be MUCH faster putting it on USB sticks and carrying it over manually, unfortunately my external HDDs are all dead. Even uploading it on Google Drive or something and redownloading it should give me at least 6MB/s.

So, any idea on how to get these files over faster?

Would have been much faster using a USB cable to an external backup HD, doesn't everyone have one if you're serious about backups !

Ethernet should be faster, idk why it would be that slow. Unless maybe one of the PC is doing a bunch off Internet related stuff at the same time, such as Steam downloads or Windows Updates for example.

I do network share transfers all the time and as long as router, and connected PCs all support 1gbps wired ethernet it shouldn't be slow.

When I just transferred approx 100 gb it took around 10 mins

Is this copying from HDD?

Possibly the laptop is the weak point here if it's just a 5400 rpm hdd

I'm noticing y'all are saying I should have my router inbetween... I don't - I just had the two PCs directly connected with an ethernet cable, ticked all the sharing options and pulled my stuff over. Is that wrong?

It was also mentioned that I shouldn't be using the internet excessively for downloads. I don't think I was, but you never know when something has decided to update itself in the background. However, I don't think the internet has much to do with having just two PCs and a cable. I figured that should work even on the moon.

I've resolved to using my USB sticks, splitting my files into 15GB bitesized pieces, and transferring them over. I've been doing this for about 2 hours now, while also reorganizing my folder structure, eliminating redundant files and photos, deleting unsatisfactory videos. Depending on what I was doing with the PCs, copying speed varied between 10-30MB/s, which is much more reasonable.

I'm almost done here. That does not mean I won't be need this advice. After all, I somehow have to get all this stuff back on my PC after wrapping up the upgrade.

Connect them both to the router.

I'm going to have to try this after the update. My router is two floors up, connected to my PC is only a WiFi stick, and there's a mesh repeater on mid floor to make sure we get a steady signal in the basement. It's all pretty neatly set up and tucked away, and my PC isn't exactly subcompact. I will definitely start there when getting these files back though.

Then just transfer the files using however they connect to the router. As long as the wifi device isn't a poor signal connection and can use wireless N at approx 72-150mbps or higher it should be fine.

Shouldn't need to do anything special if they are on the same local network and have all the same WINOS sharing options enabled. No need to go hooking them up a certain way just to transfer files. All your devices on the local network should be able to file share when on the same router. I even do that with phone to pc or tablet to pc.

...as I suspected, if you disconnect the internet on both PCs and just deal with the local gig connection between the two, then the routing issue goes away (since it’s trying to use the default route to connect, and not the direct gig connection) everything will be much simpler.

arent newer boards auto mdi/mdix?

sounds like the op does not have a gigabit switch or router with gigabit ports
