What CPU should I go with?
Hello guys.

So I have a Pentium G4400 with a H110M motherboard; it's pretty outdated, so with some money I've managed to save and with the help of my brother I plan to get myself a new CPU; at least a quad-core that can last for a couple of years before I need to upgrade again.

So I've did a lot of research and I've came up with many different options which span from really cheap to not that much expensive (I'm on a tight budget). So here are the options and their prices (with the motherboard included):

  • AMD A6-7680 (4C-4T @ 3.5 GHz) + MSI A68HM-E33 V2 = $113.28
  • AMD Athlon 3000G (2C-4T @ 3.5 GHz) + Asrock A320M HDV = $125.86
  • AMD A10 7890K (4C-4T @ 4.3 GHz) + MSI A68HM-E33 V2 = $132.16
  • Intel Pentium Gold G5400 (2C-4T @ 3.7 GHz) + MSI H310M Pro-VDH = $140.76
  • AMD Ryzen 3 1200 (4C-4T @ 3.1 GHz) + Asrock A320M HDV = $142.21
  • Intel Core I3-7350k (2C-4T @ 4.2 GHz) + Current motherboard = $154.82
  • AMD A10 7900 (4C-4T @ 3.5 GHz) + ' = $154.83
  • AMD Athlon 240GE (2C-4T @3.5 GHz) + ' = $157.02
  • AMD Ryzen 3 1300X (4C-4T @ 3.5 GHz) + ' = $159.18
  • Intel Core I5-7400 (4C-4T @ 3.0 GHz) + Current motherboard = $166.31
  • Intel Core I3-9100F (4C-4T @ 4.2 GHz) + MSI H310M Pro-VDH = $168.15
  • AMD Ryzen 3 2200G (4C-4T @ 3.7 GHz) + Asrock A320M HDV = $176.84
  • AMD Ryzen 3 3200G (4C-4T @ 4.0 GHz) + ' = $177.39
  • AMD Ryzen 5 1600 (6C-12T @ 3.2 GHz) + ' = $208.28

All the prices are converted from ARS to USD. Don't talk about the prices, I know that everything is over-priced but I frankly have no other place to buy and I need to get this in the span of like a month or so before hyperinflation comes and makes Argentina a 4th world country.

I've marked the ones that I think that make more sense given their price and performance. I sure as hell don't want a dual core, at all. A quad core will do, but the best option would be going for the R5 1600, which performs similarly to the i7-7400 and a bit worst than the i3-9100f but it's more stable, but there's a very big price gap.

And before you tell me that some of these motherboards need a BIOS upgrade to run newer CPUs; I know, I can ask for the Bios to be upgraded before getting the motherboard sent to me.

And I've already checked the used market; nothing good there, prices are even more expensive than these ones.

And no, I can't get them shipped from another country, a %30 tax to all purchases made outside of the country has just been decreed so I'll end up paying even more + shipping prices + customs tax.

Yeah, of course I do; i5-7400, i5-7600, i7-7700, but it's literally cheaper to buy an i3-9100f with a new motherboard than buying a i7-7700, which costs literally $500 USD here (No, I'm not joking).

Also, H110M only supports 6th and 7th gen Intel, and all of those CPUs are by some ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ reason overpriced as hell.
They are overpriced because people want to upgrade old systems, just like you, and there are no new ones produced.
I just sold Z77 board + i7-3770k for like ~$300, enough to buy brand new r5-3600 + decent board. Why people buy this stuff? I have no idea...

IMO - no reason to go with old hardware, if you can - get r5-3600, if you can not - r5-2600 or even r5-1600.
i3-9100F is also nice for its price, but with only 4 cores it is kind of already outdated...

Yes, but remember, I don't live in a first world country. All of the parts are bought from eBay, Amazon and other pages (or directly bought from the manufacturers), shipped here and then sold, so they have to make profit and the only way to do it is raising prices way up. Not much people actually cares about having a good computer in this country I'm pretty sure.

The 2600 and 3600 are both expensive as ♥♥♥♥ too, I can't get them, and I would love to have a hexacore but our currency is getting devaluated more and more everyday, and prices are constantly going up, so I need to grab the best option before it's too late.

If I could wait for some months, I'd do it, but just can't wait right now.

If I had the money though, I'd buy a TR 1900X, which is still overkill, and I could pick it up for like $240 USD (which is overpriced, yeah, but well), together with some decent motherboard, but I'm fresh out of highschool, got no job and won't find any anytime soon.

Threadripper is not great for games, and 1st gen one even more so. A lot of relatively slow cores + all the issues associated with essentially having 2 CPU-s in single package...
If you want cheap, and do not mind stuff being essentially salvaged from old hardware - take a look at chinese LGA2011 or used 1st gen ryzen cpu-s form China. Can get 8-core for like $50 there, along with ~$70 motherboard and really cheap ram.
A ryzen 1600 and a b350 mobo, or a Gen 6 or 7 i7.
Whichever one is cheaper

^ This!

Use "Tomahawk" for 2xxx series
Use "Tomahawk Max" for 3xxx series
Can the cheapest B450M Tomahawk support Ryzen 4000 series with a BIO Flash update?
At the moment Ryzen 2600 and 2600x have insane discounts (at least in us and eu) making those the best buy. Look at local relative prices.
Tomahawk is for Ryzen 1xxx and 2xxx

Tomahawk Max is for Ryzen 3xxx - and 4xxx, when they come out and an updated supporting bios becomes available.
seeing as you know your limitations on money and availability go with your gut on this.it appears youve done your homework here and will be the most satisfied with what you pic.good luck

So let's say I buy an 8-core CPU + a motherboard from something like AliExpress. So I'm spending $120, that's dirt cheap. Now, add shipping costs, at least $100 USD surely. Then I'm already paying a lot more but I could still get it for a nice price, if it wasn't for the customs tax which is %50 of the total value of the product, so add $60. Oh, and also add %30 of the value due to governemnt taxes to anything bought from outside of the country. Then I would be paying at least $320 USD; money that I don't have. Perhaps it would still be cheaper than buying an i7 here but it's not worth the trouble IMO.

Thanks for the suggestion though. I also thought about looking for older CPUs and motherboards but they are all overpriced too (there are i5-2500k being sold at launch price yet, ffs).

A gen 6/7 i7 would mean I don't need to upgrade my motherboard, but you know how much an i7-7700 or 6700 costs? $385 USD, at the very minimum. Definitely not worth it considering I can get an R7 1700X for less than half the price (still I don't have the money so whatever).

A R5 2600 costs $178 USD here, without motherboard included. You get the idea.

Yeah, this depends on where you live a lot.
Shiping is almost always free from there, at least to where i live. And there is no tax below 250 euro value for me.
So if it is different for you - definitely not worth it. Even adding $100 to the price makes it useless, it is salvaged used hardware after all, with its own set of potential issues and guaranteed issues.

Old non-server cpus for mainstream desktop sockets are almost always stupidly expensive and not worth the price, so in your situation it is probably better to just save for new hardware...

Another possibility might be playing around with stuff like this: https://www.win-raid.com/t3413f16-GUIDE-Coffee-Lake-CPUs-on-Skylake-and-Kaby-Lake-motherboards.html
Why is it when people post their options and budget, there is always somebody who says buy this instead, which is not even in the options or budget? sigh

Salesmen, usually looking for commission so becomes habit?

Or ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ who think they know better. If you have a budget, stick to it. Don't let some wannabe ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ guru convince you to spend more than you can afford.
