Either way - tell us what exactly that thing is, and how are you connecting it to PC.
Nintendo recently released a SNES replica controller for the nintendo switch with a battery and usb type c port + cable.
my bad,
new try:
I got the newer SNES nintendo switch controller and tried getting it to work on pc, but plugging it in via its provided usb cable, nothing happens at all, my pc wont even reconize a new device.
it works flawless on my nintendo switch, hence why i fell in love with it and wanted to try and play some more games with it on my pc

my bad about missing the key "switch" in the title lol.
steam wont find the controller either, since windows doesnt even aknowledge it, i guess i would eiher need a windows update which adds support, or a third party driver which adds functionality so my pc reconizes what ive just plugged in.
already tried some programs but none work for me as of yet, and i cant even find people who are trying to use it on pc aswell lol
Also, just in case you didn't try connecting that controller to USB 3.0 - try it. If those extra data lanes are present - there's a chance it uses exactly those to work as a wired controller.
Other than that - no idea, I guess it indeed is a software issue. If solutions won't come up in few months, but you would still want to play retro games on a PC with authentic controls - check 8Bitdo. Those guys are all about "works right away", and they have some incredible stuff like SNES-style controllers but with two analog sticks and two analog triggers, which makes it suitable for any modern game as well.
i own an SF30 Pro which are sadly discontinued due to nintendo knocking on their door and telling them they are too similar to the original, and an old n30 gen1, which im currently playing cuphead with on pc for example =)
just thought ill give it a shot over here after asking on the nintendo reddit lead to zero responses at all. guess il have to wait and keep digging deep to find any info
even if i didnt end up loving and using it alot i would still have been an awsome thing to place on my shelf alongside my other things i collected or used over the years =)
XBOX controllers - yeah, those have DPAD not suitable for platformers. DS4 feels amazingly good for this tho, for some reason DS3 of mine has too big diagonal zones, but DS4 has big standard directions zones, so it works perfect with old games for me.
Here, where I live, back then no one had SNES, not a single person. More than that - we never heard of such thing. Mega Drive was way easier to clone and hack, and we got whatever gets hacked, so no SNES nostalgia in Ukraine. This 90's piracy thing wasn't all bad tho, as before 16-bit consoles we had what we shouldn't - when all the US and EU were playing NES, we had Famicom clones. This should've been Japanese-only thing, yet it wasn't - we had Japanese-looking consoles, controllers, cartridges etc. One problem tho - while most of those Famicom clones were running PAL, which makes no sense since it's close of ♥♥♥ console, most of the games we had were NTSC-J like in Japan. So, basically, all our games were running slower than they should've been. Should you turn on some old ass music from like Battle City or Mario on default speed - most of people who played games back then will say it's running too fast, lol!
