NEED HELP on upgrading my PC for Rainbow Six Siege
Hey everyone! I need help on how to upgrade my PC based on the problems below. Your help would be greatly appreciated!

Here are my PC specs:

CPU: Intel(R) Pentium(R) Gold G5400 CPU @ 3.70GHz 3.70GHz
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti
Motherboard: Gigabyte H310M DS2
PSU: DeepCool DE500 V2
RAM: 8.0 GB
SSD: 118 GB (101/118 GB used)
HDD: 900 GB (I don't use this)

R6 Siege Settings:

Graphics Settings: Everything on LOW

Resolution: 1280x1024 (I run this because my monitor has 75hz option for this resolution)

PROBLEMS:

- CPU usage is at 100% (does this mean my GPU is bottlenecking?)

- On average, my FPS in-game jumps from around 80-100 depending on whats happening, but at times it randomly drops to 55-60 for a few seconds which is very irritating.

- Discord becomes very choppy when running R6 (I can't hear and speak to people clearly in Discord, other than that, when I run R6, Discord would crash and I need to restart it)

- Additional info: I have already tried tweaking every windows and NVIDIA setting possible to make the most out of my PC!

I haven't upgraded yet since I built the PC but I think now is the time, except I have no idea which part should I upgrade and why, which is why I need your help!
For a start, I just want to know which part I should upgrade first in order to solve the FPS dropping problem, but later on in the future, I would also like to play the game at 144hz!

Some people say that I should upgrade my CPU, and I'm thinking about i5-9400f? Some people also told me to upgrade my RAM but they don't tell me why, so I really have no idea!
SO GUYS, WHICH PART SHOULD I UPGRADE FIRST AND WHY?

cpu first, the g5400 is a dual with ht (similar to older gen i3)
newer games can use more cores/threads, will really help with background tasks while gaming
ie. discord, chrome, all other windows hidden tasks

it can take a i3/i5/i7 8xxx-9xxx

choices are here
https://pcpartpicker.com/products/cpu/#sort=price&C=4,32&A=3500000000000,4700000000000&s=11,12,13&F=20,21&xcx=0

i3 9100f has 4 real cores, or i5 9600k has 6 (your board will not allow overclocking, but still make use of its higher base and turbo clocks)

1. no... your cpu is too weak for games that use more than 2 cores...

2. if you run anything in background it is too much

3. your ram is also on its limit just see above

how much money do you have to upgrade?

I used to play rainbow six siege several years ago and it ran well on dual-core i3.
Has anything changed since than?

Thanks for the help! So are the CPUs you mentioned better than the i5-9400f? I also plan on upgrading my GPU later on in the future, will the i5-9400f be enough?

Right now I can only afford the price of a i5-9400f, I also need to upgrade ram in your opinion?

Honestly - you are making things worse with your settings.
Set resolution to native, cap fps to refresh, close all background applications (if you have any other device that can run discord - run it there) and judging by what you describe you should get consistent 60FPS. Which will be way, way better than inconsistent 55-100FPS on 75Hz refresh scaled resolution screen.
If you want high refresh "in future" be aware that you will need high-end hardware for it and plan accordingly. You will probably have to replace PC alltogether.

Thanks for the advice, but if I would want it to run at 75hz stable, will upgrading my CPU to a i5-9400f solve all my current problems now, and be a good enough CPU if ever I were to upgrade my GPU in the future? (In the future, I want to run the game at 144fps)

8400/9400/f have slower base clock with 6 cores no ht
imho spend the $20 more for the higher clocks of the 9600k
the g5400 cooler will work on it 55-65w isnt a huge jump, and without oc it will run cool
or you can lower vcore if its running warm

i5-9400f is mostly fine now, and should fix your issues, but with 6 cores and no HT it is already "not great" and may have similar issues to your pentium in not-so-distant future. Do not expect it to be good for running games at 144fps.

Thanks for the response! Btw, as a new guy to PCs, mind telling me what higher clocks do and also what is hyper-threading?
L37 2019년 12월 22일 오전 10시 41분
Again, 6 core no HT. Higher frequency is nice, for now it will be fine, but how it will handle new games - nobody knows. With how things are progressing, 16c32t mid-range cpu-s and such, i would not expect it to be good for significant amount of time.
However, with intel you basically have no choice...

games are still more dependent on a single core, renderers/ai ect.. can run on others but if the main game thread can not keep up, the game will not be smooth
L37 2019년 12월 22일 오전 11시 08분
Sure, and that will probably remain true for foreseeable future. But if all those extra stuff in separate threads causes 100% load for whole CPU game will not be smooth either.
Seen this on relatively new 4c4t and 4c8t cpu-s already for some games, 6c6t is still fine, but who knows for how long?

OP for now set your in-game resolution back to 1080p native, lowering it to 720p is making your already weak CPU work harder, you’ll get better performance upping it.

Did a bottleneck test, your CPU is too weak for your GPU, but I don't believe that is the main issue.
Apparently there is an issue with the game that makes CPU usage go to 100% and here's a method to fix it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C0NS82kCHH8

Don't go to 720p for 75hz, stick with 1080p. As for a possible CPU upgrade, Ryzen 3600 with a MSI tommahawk max and 16gb of ram. Here's a list mate: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/rYR8WD
