I honestly do not remember - do this CPU-s already have pci-e controller embedded? If they do, did you by any chance manage to disable cpu which has pci-e lanes GPU is attached to? How did you disable it? Bios? Did its ram remain available?
Also Witcher3 is not demanding enough of a game for such tests anyways.
Also - threadripper is dual cpu system in single package for all intents and purposes, and this is why it has "gaming mode" which disables all the cores of one "cpu".
To answer your questions: I went through msconfig (boot tab, advanced options) and told it to run 12, not 24. I think you're on the money with asking about the memory (I think my shortcut mightve skewed the results), I left them all in (I figured since the dimms arent in the proper channels for the active CPU , the PC would simply not use them unless it really needed them, seeing that it's far from needing more than what's in the active CPU dimm slots, i figured it would be moot, I could be wrong.... I really should just remove the riser tray with the 2nd CPU/ram slots and watch what happens...
I am way out in right field about your question about the PCI controllers, I just spent a little time trying to learn what that all is about but I'm not sure I understand it well... The Mobo is a 06FW8P, having the 5520 chipset using 1366 socket CPUs (In which I've got Xeon x5675s, which do not have integrated controllers...) On top of the controllers being on the mobo (I'm asking out of curiousity), wouldn't my video card slot not be working if I removed the CPU associated with it? (PCIE 2.0/x16)
I'm thinking my system is hardcore bottlenecked via the cpu/s...Rationale being that when I overclock the GPU (like, 200mhz over stock "game clock"(AMD marketing buzzword for not base speed but it's not going full tilt either.) doesnt buy me a single fps increase in neither Heaven, nor Superposition.
Yeah im thinking of going for a nice threadripper setup maybe. The way you did it memory definitely remained available and usable.
If controller is in chipset what i said does not matter. In this case slots are connected to chipset on the motherboard along with CPU-s. It is relevant for newer cpu-s which have whole NB, not just memory controller integrated. What i ment was - if you turn off cpu cores on cpu which has GPU connected to its integrated pci-e lanes your gpu will still work, but additional latency will be introduced since it will work over the bus cpu-s are connected to each other with. If you physically remove CPU in such configuration related slot will stop working, yes, but removing cpu and disabling cores are 2 different things.
x5675 is not that bad. If it is not too hard try removing second CPU and see how it changes things. See how your GPU tests compare to other peoples ones (use userbenchmark.com or someting). I think this system is perfectly fine, and CPU will be good enough for all the games.
Overclocking 5700 is not as easy and straightforward as it might seem, and amd's tools are completely broken. Do not expect frequency to be exactly what you set, it will be what amd's half-functional software decides is "optimal". Raising max boost frequency may even result in lower performance in some cases. Monitor frequency using 3rd party tools like gpu-z or msi afterburner and if you seriously want to play arount with overclocking and potentially undervolting look into modding SPPT. "More power tool" is a good place to start. Also be aware that power/performance scaling beyond ~2Ghz is terrible for this card and is generally not worth it.
And if i sound a little annoyed with AMD - i am. As 5700XT owner. The amount of stuff that is broken or does not work as advertised/expected is beyond what one can expect from average early access game in steam.
lololol If you told me 20 years ago about how much effort the developers put into his hair instead of other places/things ingame, I would've raised an eyebrow and laughed. But then again... I guess his hair IS kinda like, RIGHT UNDER under the area you're spending most time looking- Clever allocation of resources I guess.
