7600k vs. 9600k
Is it worth the upgrade from my 7600k to a 9600k?
The 9600k has 6 cores instead of the 4 from the 7600k, is it much better in performance in terms of gaming and running apps like discord in the back?

No, you're better off just getting a very powerful cooler and overclocking your i5-7600K. Either fat air cooler like a Noctua NH-D15 Chromax Black or a Be Quiet Dark Rock Pro 4 if that Noctua is out of stock. That or a 280mm liquid cooler by EVGA, Corsair, or NZXT. Plus the day you do upgrade your CPU you can keep using that powerful cooler.

But if you insist on upgrading your CPU I suggest going with atleast the 8 core i7-9700K instead... Although it would also mean getting a Z390 motherboard as well.

you will need a new main board .. the 7XXX series CPUs use a different pinout then the 9 series ones .. Intel changed the socket

and yes the 9600 K is faster as it has a higher turbo speed

and yes Provided you have your 7600 K on a decent motherboard like a z series mother board .. they do overclock well ..with some chips hitting 5 ghz

i keep my 7600 K @ 4.4 ghz on all 4 cores on my ASUS strix Z 270 H board , i could probably go higher but i'd need to get away from an air cooled PC ..right now i use a hyper evo 212 cooler and the system runs my games fine

If gonna go change boards, which would be required, then better off going Ryzen

if he goes ryzen tho he should get fast ram too .. ryzen chips like faster ram

so new board new CPU + ram

I'm on a z270 board right now, thought they both were at 1151 socket so it was 'easily' changeable, now I see I have to change my mainboard too I don't see any reason.
My 7600k is steadily overclocked at 4.6.
Might take a look at the i7-7700k instead, there is no need to take major upgrades for now. If I'm going for big upgrades, I might just sell my recent PC and build a complete new PC.
no man the Z 270 boards max out with a i 7 7700 K

anything past that you need to change the motherboard as intel changed the pins in the socket for the 8 and 9 series CPU's

good luck finding a 7700 K cheap

looking back i wish i would have waited a few months more before i built this system in 2016 ,but it serves me well to this day i have not found a game i cant run on it

My PC runs great but sometimes I have the idea I miss out on a tiny bit of CPU power to fulfill my needs
time for a new build then it sounds like .. i'm gonna do the same and keep this system as a back up when i get my tax refund

may go ryzen for the next build tho ..last 4 have all been intels
There is a difference in performance. Discord is a known 4 core i5 performance killer. The 7600k has a decent cpu thread speed but only 4 threads means the total performance is not that different from 2011 i7 level. The 9600k has a 50% increase in number of threads and faster threads. So instead of losing 1/4 of not so great with discord it will be 1/6 of something good.

The 9700k or ryzen 3600 are the two alternatives worth considering. 6 hyperthreaded cores versus 8 full cores. The 9700k is a level higher in performance.

You could run discord on another device.
