RTX 2070 Super issue
Hoping to get a little input on this issue. I recently purchased and installed an EVGA RTX 2070 Super FTW3 (model is actually 08G-P4-3277-KR). The monitor I am connecting it to is the Acer GN246HL 144hz monitor.

Previously I had an EVGA 1070 card installed and connected to the monitor via a DVI cable which allowed me to choose the 144 hz resolution as the monitor had a DVI input. No issues running any games through this connection. The other input on this monitor is an HDMI input but this is limited to 60 hz. For whatever reason Acer did not include a display port on this monitor.

So i now have the 2070 connected through an HDMI cable into the monitor and this is where the problems start. When I launch a game, say Far Cry 5, I can hear sound but the screen is black, occasionally you can see what appears to be scanlines but the game never displays on the screen. Alt-tabbing does nothing to bring the desktop back, although you can hear the windows sounds, it just does not display the desktop. I have to reboot the computer to get back to windows. There are a number of other games that do this same thing but there are others that run and display with no issues.

Could the issue be that the HDMI output on the card is overdriving the signal to the monitor thus causing the black screen?

I am thinking I may need to get a new monitor with a display port and connect the card and monitor this way to see if the problem persists. I am hoping the card isn't faulty.

The rest of the system is:

MB - Asus Maximus VIII hero (have never updated BIOS not sure this would help)
CPU - I7-6700K (stock speed)
RAM - 16 GB Gskill Ripjaws

Old drivers for 1070 were uninstalled and new drivers for 2070 were installed.

No, likely just a bad cable. I would buy a new monitor, that one is TN which isn't very good, and no DP.

Tried an old HDMI cable as well as a new one and had the same results. I am thinking (hoping) the monitor is the issue.

Do you have a spare monitor to test with?

Running at 60 hz at 1080p, although windows is showing this under HDTV not under PC under the change resolutions settings. I can't get to the menu in the affected games, screen goes black and stays black but the sound is able to be heard.

Can you post a picture of the HDTV screen thing?

Not sure how to post a picture. It is under the change resolution option of the Nvidia Control Panel. The connector is showing as HDMI - HDTV, previously with the 1070 I believe it was DVI-PC. There are resolutions available under PC resolution but 1920x1080 is not one of them.

Under Ultra HD, HD...

720p, 1280x720
720p, 1176x664
576p, 720x576
480p, 720x480

Under PC
1680x1060
1600x1024
1600x900
and downward from there. What is weird is that 1920x1080 is not a choice.

I considered that but with the cost of an active adapter I think I would just put out the extra money and get a new monitor. I would try a passive adapter but I don't think the 2070 super's display port is dp++.

So it seems it was an issue with the old monitor. I tried a new monitor connected by a display port cable and all is well. Thanks to everyone who helped me to get this figured out.

An active adapter is under 20$
