1600 x 900 monitors obsolete?
I'm finally upgrading my PC and monitor, but I like my smallish 20" monitor, (and the low prices) but I noticed almost no one is making them anymore. What are the odds that newer games won't support that resolution in the near future? All I need is to buy yet another one in a year or two because it's considered too rare to bother supporting.

It's called evolution. Technology improves over time. The monitor isn't obsolete just old. Unlikely that games won't support it or that you'll be able to find a new one with same specs.

Have to agree they are definitely not growing in numbers, I got my son a 1080p replacement for his 900p after a fidget spinner mishap, scored an Asus 1080/60 23” for just under $100 on sale

in all honesty it is much better and only needs a slight more gpu punch.

no, they are still supported
its an odd res, but dx games will be able to use it at its native res

Slim to none. It's the same aspect ratio as 1920x1080, it's only a minute difference in screen real estate so scaling won't really matter and the games usually get their list of supported resolutions from the GPU driver. Developers would have to go out of their way to not support it.

Once 4K becomes far more mainstream (currently only 1.14% in the hardware survey), then it's time to worry. But 1080p and by extension 1600x900 are going to be around for a long time.

Can get 24 inch 1080p for around 100$

1080p/144hz around 200$

20 inch is too small for good gaming experinece and they don't make any panels with good tech below 24 inch anymore. Unless we're talking laptops.

also with many 1600 X 900 screens you may run into a problem with a modern GPU

my oldest flat screen (its an old asus one ) here only has a VGA input and a DVI input ..many modern GPUs only support HDMI and display port connection ..hence you would need to find a proper adapter .

your better off just buying a decent 1080 P or better screen if you plan of gaming in the future ..and yea 20 inch is kinda limiting , i use that PC only as a TV next to my bed for steaming movies

also i have seen 1080 P screens as low as $89 bucks

I've never been super fussy about fancy graphics, more about being inexpensive, sturdy and compact. I'm old school, spent years gaming on a 1024x768 with 24 FPS and tons of lag. With that as a baseline I'm easy to please!
I did just double check and the monitor I was looking at lacks HDMI same as my old one. I guess maybe it's just as well to upgrade to a 24" after all. Time to start rearranging the desk to make room!

Thanks for the input everyone.

I beg to differ. Smaller monitors are much nicer imho. Plus the added pixel density from it is pretty nice.

Plenty of games still support 480p, and 720p.
I don't see why they would ever stop either, doesn't make any sense to. However, higher resolutions I can understand, because scaling is harder. (Smaller = easy, larger = harder. Because you can always reduce a piece of UIs size and it look fine, but if you make it bigger, it becomes pixelated.)

As nice as a smaller monitor is (especially at 1080p, which, to me at least, looks bad at 24 inches) having a newer, better monitor, is more important.
High refresh rate, higher resolution, better colours, better brightness, better contrast, lower input lag, faster (average) pixel response time, etc. The benefit is going to outweigh the con(s).

You make it sound like an epic quest rather than the $5 purchase from every electronics/hardware/discount/grocery/website store around that it is.

Having DVI Monitor is do - able via Active DP male to DVI-D female adapter. But if all you have is VGA it's time to retire those Displays or keep for legacy PC uses.

No, they're not obsolete. Mainstream? No. But resolutions from 20 years ago (like 1024x768) are still supported by a most new games. No reason to think you'll suddenly stop seeing 1600x900 as an option in a settings menu.

Many games made for 16:9 will look terrible though and not allow the ingame UI to look correct or it will get in the way due to already low res, or when using a res that is 4:3 or 5:4
Rumpelcrutchskin Jan 25, 2020 @ 4:24pm
It was obsolete for desktop PC five years ago not to mention now.

not really.

Most newer titles still look plenty playable, just not pretty, at 720p, well below 900P.

That said, the quality OP can gain jumping to 1080P will be pretty massive. I know the GF was very happy at the detail she gained when I jumped her up to 1080 off of 900p.

Only reason to run 900P now days would be for a lower end GPU, as its a rez that something like a GTX-480 could handle while still pushing fairly new (read BFv) titles. I have an older Asus ROG Laptop with a gimped GTX-460m-1GB model and it can *just* pull BFV at a bit above 30fps @ 900p, or GTA-V on lower settings @ 60 @ 900p.
