Trustworthy routers?

As we all know, Cisco and Linksys have been exposed as filthy stoolies for the NSA. I've been using a 15-year-old Netgear with glitchy firmware that they never bothered to release any patches for, and now it's time to get with the times and upgrade to something with MU-MIMO and OpenWRT support. I'm looking at either a TP-Link Archer A9 or the Invizbox 2. But it looks like Invizbox makes you buy a subscription to their VPN service bundled in with hardware, and I already have a VPN.

What does everyone think? Chances are, TP-Link with vanilla firmware will be phoning home to the Chinese government, but even if OpenWRT doesn't block that, I'd rather they got it than the treasonous pigs in this country.

I use ASUS. Like their interface and model I have allows you to put dd-wrt on it. Asus is pretty good on updates. I just did one when I was reminded I haven't checked in a while. Not sure how high they are on the list of comprised routers, but I feel safe with it.

Use a separate router and switch with an AP.

If practical, use an old computer, get a gigbit NIC, gigabit switch and install pfsense.
