CM TX3 Evo CPU Cooler + i7 9700(non-k)
Would this be a good cooler for the regular 9700?

When playing Rome 2 and Warhammer 2, i saw the temps get up to over 90c in MSI afterburner, which obviously isn't healthy for the CPUs lifespan or performance.

I currently have the intel stock cooler, would the CM TX3 Evo be good enough to keep the CPU below 90c while gaming?

lastly, anyone have this combo? If so what are your temps like when playing CPU heavy games?

It'll be okay, but you should get a 212 EVO instead if you're going to get an aftermarket cooler.
I would get something little more meatier for this like CM Hyper 212 if your case can fit 160mm high heat sink.
tx3 will be ok for a 90w locked cpu
but for long term, get a cooler with a 120mm fan
t4 is slightly better and about the same price

but if you can get a 212 +/evo/black/rgb for the same price, go with that instead

TX3 is also a 92mm fan, there are not many good fans to choose from in that size. Hyper212 is 120mm fan and also comes with extra set of brackets in case you wish to do push+pull fan config. With a tower cooler using standard 120mm or 140mm case fan(s) they are much more common to find on the market in case you need a replacement fan. As with Hyper212 you can use pretty much whatever 120mm fan you want.
Overheating with the stock cooler on non-k 9700's (and earlier non-k i7's) is a well-known problem which requires a cooler replacement. The bigger the fan the better the cooler and the less noise. I have a Gammaxx 300 (120mm) on my 95 Watt i7 - about $30 in AU. Look for cooler comparison reviews on the web as cost doesn't equate to performance. Some coolers have pre-applied thermal paste which makes installation easier as keeping the thickness of the paste layer as thin as possible improves cooling efficiency.

Yea Hyper212 EVO or something similar from BeQuiet.

Well AU is different. Hyper212 EVO is about 30$ in USA

Thanks for the input guys. I decided to go with the CM TX3 Evo, because it was about $20 cheaper and is easier to mount then the 212, since the TX3 has the same push pins as the stock cooler, thus meaning I don't have to dismount the motherboard to mount a backplate (yes I'm lazy, I know).

the t4 also uses pushpins iirc
TX3 and T4 pretty much aren't good enough for the 9700 heat output. T4 may look very similar to 212 but I have tried it and it's only maybe half the fins of the 212 and it's mounting options are limited.

If Hyper212 isn't good price in your region, look at Arctic Cooling, Deep Cool, BeQuiet. But look at the reviews, if they only have old reviews it should be made to handle a cpu such as 4790k, 6700k, 7700k... basically if it's good for those i7 at stock clocks it will be fine for a 9700

I had no trouble keeping an 8350 and 9590 cooled with Hyper212 although I replaced the CM fan eventually with Corsair SP120

You probably have a cutout at the back of the case where CPU sits so you wouldnt need to remove motherboard, all you do is take the back panel of the case off.
Unless it`s some really cheap case.

Ok yeah, I found out my case has a cutout, I feel dumb now. I have a Cooler Master K500 case, and the specs say it can have up to a 163mm CPU cooler and the 212x is 158mm, so the 212x should technically fit, right?

I guess I'll cancel the Tx3 order and get the 212x instead, even if it is $20 more expensive.

Again thanks everyone for the help.

a few of the cm coolers come in amd or intel flavors for their brackets

ex. t400i = intel, t400 = both

looks like most of the newer versions come with both intel and amd mounts

That's too close on the height.

Try this instead...

Well the shop I'm ordering from doesn't have that cooler, and I'd like to think a CM case would be somewhat designed to fit their own coolers. 5mm of free space will be a tight fit, but it should fit none-the-less.

That's literally half of a centimetre away, it's cutting it too close to where I wouldn't even bother trying.
